Thanks to all on the forum that have replied about my request on military cooking during WWII. The project is almost done but I have run into a few picture snags. Many people have been kind enough to emailed me pics, but many come from the web - net pics are too low in res and I can't properly credit the image to the original source. Pictures would have to be scanned in around 300 dpi either RGB or Gray scale.

I have contacted several museums for the following pics but with no luck so far. That being said, 24 museums and organizations have supplied info, graphics and pictures.

First - I am looking for any Higher res photo of an Army Air Corps crew, crew members, Pilot etc eating or drinking. Chow, grub, on ground, in flight, at leisure with coffee, beer, soda etc. The food can be issued rations or a quick grab sandwich or snack. As long as it shows Army Air Corps guys. I have pics from the FT Lee Museum and the Air Force Museum on standard issue rations.

Second - I am looking for a few more High Res pictures I have seen low res shots of on this forum. One is a group of GI's eating with a little French Girl sitting with them. And the other is either a GI in a Jeep heading across Guadalcanal with sweet rolls layered across the hood or a GI in the pacific delivering food via a mini tractor or jeep and small trailer.

If you, a relative etc is pictured in a photo you would like to submit please feel free to do so. What does not make it into the book will hopefully be used in an online version with a regional Veterans Museum. So they will be put to good use.

Regardless of the picture, please pass on any info I can use in the caption. Also, if you have it, I would need info in which to credit the photo and your name. The credit would read something like this.
Picture from the collection of Dan Pictureson, or Courtesy of Dan Pictureson. If from a Museum etc it would read Picture courtesy of, or from the collection of the USS Alabama Museum original by the Army Air Corps, Signal Corps, Museum of the.... etc.

Any help would be appreciated. And the help so far has been wonderful. And I am always ready to talk Chow on any level! You can email me on the forum or shoot me an email to
    thedeckchef@hotmail.com

    Thanks much.

    Kent,

I have a couple Signal Corps photos from the NARA showing GIs having
Christmas dinner in Italy in 1943. Do you want these?

I scan at 800 dpi, by the way.

I don't have pictures but am remembering my father and his friends describing how they would heat hot water for coffee or heat something they planned to eat while on patrols. If caught by their officer they were in trouble. They would use their steel helmet to set over the fire to accomplish the feat. If caught they were badly chastised and my father memorized the chewing out the officer would provide. The officer would yell to the soldier who heated his hat, "Now you have ruined the temper and the bullets will go right through!" as he remembers a certain officer always yelling this at the person who did this. I also learned while demilling(I used to demill ammo) that many Colonels would request a few granules or pellets of cannon gunpowder that worked excellently well to heat up a helmet quickly to heat the water or they would use it to quickly start a wood fire if the wood was damp. I have confirmed this works very well. A pellet or two will burn slowly when not contained.

    Go here:
Search WWII US Air Force Photos at Footnote
There are thousands of free (public domain) high resolution USAAF photos. Better yet, they are seachable. A quick trial using "mess" and "meal" returned numerous photos.
    Happy hunting.

Hey Dave, If you could send a scan or two it would be fantastic. 300dpi should be fine unless they are small. Then 600dpi would probably be better. Please email me with any credit line info and cutline info that you would have. As in. Photo Courtesy of Dave ???? - Original photo by Signal Corps 1942. Etc.

Just pic one or two that really grab you and possibly are not like the same ones used everywhere.

Thanks so much for the offer.

Thanks for the story Victor. If you have a moment shoot me an email. I would love to get some more insight on your dad's stories. Was he a WWII veteran? Thanks - Kent
