Howdy I'm trying to determine what device might have been placed in the hole seen in the attached picture of a US Army Airborne badge. I'm restoring for display the badge and associated medals earned by one of our servicemen for my in-laws. The ribbons indicate that for the European-African Middle Eastern Campaign Military Medal, the veteran earned one Arrowhead Device (bronze) and four Service Stars (also bronze). Thanks ahead of time for your help. Dane View attachment 20522
The hole is for a bronze star, the same as on a campaign ribbon.Star indicates a combat jump such as D-Day,or Market garden etc.
The hole looks to be consistant with a "star" device used to denote a combat jump. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parachutist_Badge_(United_States)#Combat_Jump_Device The stars were often applied "in the field" as a soldier modification. The star is the same as what would be used on the EAME Campaign Medal/ Ribbon, except that it was gold in color.
Thanks guys...I'll track one down and complete the badge. Appreciate the color reference...that'll help keep the integrity of the award. Dane
