As Lord Irwin he was Viceroy of India from 1926 to 1931, and his statesmanlike handling of a difficult situation won for him widespread admiration. Succeeding Mr. Anthony Eden as Foreign Secretary in February, 1938, he played a prominent part in the Munich Crisis.
