Born and raised in Banff, Waterworth enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force at the age of 18. On his 33rd mission during the Second World War, his plane was shot down over the French coast on Sept. 19, 1942; he then wandered for two weeks until the Germans found him. Waterworth became a prisoner of war, held in a camp called Stalag VlllB/344 in then Lamsdorf, Germany, from October 1942 to April 1945.
