What if the September 11th attacks hadn’t happened but all the other terrorist attacks had – USS Cole, Madrid and London bombings etc.
To sound cynical & callous - America would be staying largely out of 'terrorism' stuff (with the obvious exception of their Intelligence services), there would be no 'War on Terror', no invasion of Afghanistan, and (probably, though it is up for debate) no invasion of Iraq.
No invasion of Afganistan and no war on terror, but still invasion of Iraq (they were looking for excuses even before 9.11).
But without planes crashing into US buildings, would there have been enough support for the action - after all there have been suicide bombings in Israel for a while and that didn't cause anyone to start saying WMD's could be next? I'm with Ricky on this, I think most Americans would see it largely a European/ME problem.
Tough call really. Eliminating the attacks mentioned above, many more "incidents" have occured beyond that. Wether those would happen anyway or were inspired by actions of opposing sides is impossible to tell.
Your nuanced statement is confusing me, what did you do with Stix? TD: I don't think this thread is about wishing it never happened, but rahter about determining what would have been different if it hadn't. The Taliban would still have been in power in Afghanistan, but Saddam is another matter.
