Seems fair , we ( I assume all of you guys and gals exist ) must be a microcosm of any deity , in us is hell and heaven , damnation and salvation the old chesnut of god as all powerful ,all knowing , all loving is true only if one presume than in fact we are it's conciousness . this is what make the christian message so wrenching , for we know how we fail , yet we hope to be saved from ourselves . . . . now , I've got a headache and it's time for some liquid worship . .
Part of a rather misguided attempt by a couple of Popes to ease thee spread of Christianity. The theory was that if you take a Pagan festival, re-name a few bits, take out the naughty bits, and assign it a Christian evant (like the birth of Christ, or the re-birth of Christ) then the Pagans would be happier to convert. And it worked. Except it screwed up Christianity. Take Easter. Officially the celebration of Christ being crucified & rising from the dead (worth celebrating, as that was largely the point of his time on earth). Biblically, Easter should therefore be 3 days after Passover. Have a look through your diaries for the last few years and see whether the dates match. The 'Christian' date of Easter was fixed to cover a handful of 'New Life / Rebirth' festivals, mostly NW European. Bunnies laying eggs are a big feature of German pre-Christian religion, for example. The only people following the 'true' date were the Celtic Church, but they were over-ruled at the Synod of Whitby (664 AD). The Synod took place when Catholic missionaries, sent to 'convert' Britain, discovered that the Irish Celtic church was already doing so. However, there were some minor doctrinal differences*, so Whitby was held to sort these differences out. The outcome was decided in favour of the Roman Catholics - the Catholics say that it was obedience to St Peter, and everybody else points out that the Roman Catholic church stood for obedience to the ruler of a nation, which is a handy asset for a ruler... * Mostly the date of Easter, but also which style of tonsure to wear! Roman Catholics favoured a bald spot with a fringe of hair all around, which the Celts favoured a bald front to the head, with long hair at the back (the dividing line was roughly where the ears are)
I stated other because I don't know what I class as, bassically I don't care if there is or is not a god, it doesn't bother me what so ever, I used to be a protestant christian but gaveit up when i was about 10 or 12 and have been like I am now ever since.
To explain a bit more about this I will state why they did it in the first place and where it got them so far as I know. They started it because Pope John Paul II requested that after his death the church rexamine limbo to try to explain it better. There was talk of getting rid of limbo but they didnt get far as its been around a year probably more since they first said anything about it so I have serious doubts about any change.
hmmm...iirc ...the limbo dance went out of style in 63 ...except at certain all inclusive couples only carribian resorts... ..ricky ...celtic bunnies were able to lay eggs ??? ...i thought all rabbits were pretty much mammals ...prolly the romans rubbed out the celtic bunnies ...gone forever ..like the dodo birds and 15 year old virgins ...sad...another man made extinction...
Is it too much to ask to be able to separate churchiosity from relationship with God [ otherwise known as christianity]. For myself I am a born again Christian. A matter of interest, Atheism is a religion, for you believe that there is none to believe in. There are a number of religions availiable if you so choose, Materialism Idol worship [ otherwise known as envy/greed] pornography and some others that I could remember if I werent a true follower of altsheimer... Just some other thoughts, you guys might like to discuss There are some things God cannot do, yes, that is correct, Cannot do. 1 He cannot sin, that is do anything wrong. 2He cannot learn 3 He cannot love you any less than He does now. 4 He cannot be disappointed in you. 5 He cannot change His mind.
There are quite a few religions which involve a relationship with God, apart from Christianity. Nope. As the saying goes, if atheism is a religion then not playing chess is a hobby. Atheism is simply a lack of any belief in the supernatural. The tax authorities who determine the charitable status of religions do not agree with you... Religion involves a belief in the supernatural - something not of this earth, which cannot be proved by any of the rules of evidence. I agree that that can be extended to include such matters as astrology, spiritualism and New Age ideas like crystal healing, but there is nothing supernatural about materialism and pornography. Really? How do you know, and what are they? This could get to be an interesting philosophical discussion - surely atheism is the belief that there are no gods? First answer - I would guess he has read the Bible Second answer - they are right there at the bottom of his post - and at the bottom of yours too!
A "belief" is not the same thing as a "religion". I believe that the sun will rise every morning, but I have good reason to believe that and (unlike some previous religions) don't need to assume that we should be making sacrifices to ensure that it happens. I have spelled out my views on the subject of belief HERE. Ah right, sorry - there was such a huge gap that they were off the bottom of my screen! I used to be Agnostic, but recently my views have hardened as far as religion is concerned, to Atheist...
Im agnostic. Im agnostic because I believev that there is no proof proving or disproving a supernatural existence , i.e God/s
I remember a comedy sketch which had 'Christmas carols for agnostics' "Noel, Noel, Born is the King of Israel. Possibly" This is not intended to poke fun at anybody except in a good-humoured way.
That reminds me of an SF novel by James Morrow called "City of Truth", about a society in which everyone is conditioned from birth to be able to say nothing but the provable truth, with no invention or exaggeration. So the principal character drinks his morning cup of "Drinkable Coffee", gets into his "Ford Adequate" car and, as he passes a church, he notices a placard outside announcing: "If God exists, Jesus may have been his son." HMMMM I'm seriously thinking to convert to Pastafarianism. Prospect of going to better place with beer vulcanos and striper factory is quite apealing. Us pirates will go there together with FSM worshippers (and all other pasta worshippers). (i score 2 of three - pirate and pasta worshipper) BTW did you notice that UFO are almost always pizza shaped? What could this mean? Could this be sent by FSM to check up on us?
In my opinion, a belief system is, in fact a religion. If that belief is that God dosent exist, then that is a religion, that is what you choose to have 'faith' in. You seem to think that there is no basis for christian belief, in an experiential fashion. I can assure you that there is a relationship with God which is experiential. I like your system of grading, but coming from a believing point of experience, then I would disagree with your evaluations. sorry about the big gap. It was supposed to be a big scroll down to the shocking revelation, oh,well, never mind. I think that a lot of the world's religions are about appeasing or influencing the local god into doing what you want. To me , a religion is something that the believer focusses on as the centre, or core of their existence. In some cases some people have , at the core of their being, these things, porno, or things.
