Well as my first official post I thought I'd ask a question we had a lot of fun with in grad school. I looked to see if it had been posted in the past but couldn't find it so please forgive the transgression if it's already been done. So, which WWII film would you like to see redone and who would you put in it? My choice..."The Devil's Brigade". Don't pin me down on a cast yet..as I haven't figured out who best to fill the shoes of William Holden, Cliff Robertson and Vince Edwards.

Id like to see: Decision Before Dawn, remade-but only with the correct cast.

Mel Gibson would have to be the Richard Basehart part of: Lt. Rennick. Thomas Kretschmann would be the Hans-Christian Blech part of: "Tiger" and the chap who played one of the Corporals in: Stalingrad (along with Kretschmann) I forget his name-but he would have to be: "Happy" which was so excellently played by: Oskar Werner.

I don't yet know who could be the part of the Americal Colonel (Gary Merrill) who was in charge of the operation. Possibly: Sam Elliott or Tom Selleck. Im a bit peeved with Tom Hanks at this time so hes not selected for a part in this movie.

The part of Colonel von Ecker (O.E.Hasse) the feller who played Der Fuhrer in Downfall.

The part of the SS "Special Courier" played by Wilfrid Seyffarth-easily played by the chap who was the German Sergeant-whose wife runs off with a Frenchman, in: Stalingrad-I cant think of his name off-hand?

The part of the Soldatenheim Girl which was originally played by Hildegard Knef-would also definately have to be played by a German or Austrian Actress.

The Commandos Strike At Dawn is another that comes to mind.

As much as I enjoy the original, my vote is for "Sink the Bismarck!".

As long as they dont turn it into something like "Pearl Harbor".

Sink the Bismarck would be good.
    In Harms Way
    Battle of the Bulge

But Numero Uno would have to be MIDWAY. That waste of celluloid screams for a competent remake.

I totally agree with that one!

The question is: how can they re-make an epic movie like this without putting in the special interest love story to muck it up?

I mean, many of the classics do have them as well, but they did not seem to ruin the film or turn it into a total chick flick.

Leave out the love story, and make a movie about the event. The drama surrounding getting the Yorktown in and out of Pearl, the code breakers, VB5 being replace by VB3 at the last minute. So much more.

Give it the Speilberg/Hanks treatment, and it would still be far and away superior than the original.

'Pearl Harbor'. I'd like to see it done properly. Like 'Tora! Tora! Tora!' but with modern special effects.

That would be great! Or how about this?

Re-release Tora! Tora! Tora!, and CG enhance it in certain parts, like George Lucas did for the Star Wars Trilogy, or Spielberg did for E.T.

Re-makes my a$$, there's far too many stories out there to tell without all that re-making and sequelling that Hollyweird is hung up on. Sorry about raining on anyone's parades and p1$$ing in anyone's cornflakes....

But if they had to remake something for the sake of redemption, I agree that "The Battle of The Bulge" and "Midway" should have priority because they were so lame.

Agreed. I look at it like this. Battle of the Bulge and Midway have never HAD a movie. :D

Love to see a real good adaptation of "Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors."

Yes, great choice! A dy-no-mite story in the making that NEEDS to be told. But that is another thread altogether. Go ahead and start it and who knows where it will go.

the desert fox. The story of Rommel - 1951

That movie could use a remake

The actor I like to see play the role of Rommel is Ed Harris

Actually, I had a similar thought. Do we have a thread for WWII movies that we think ought to be made for the first time? I'd like to see "Kursk", "Ultra", "Buna", "Guderian", "Zhukov", "Leyte Gulf", "Manhattan Project" and many others ....

Heck, was there ever even a movie about the invasion of Poland, which kicked off the war?

Oh, and "Terror in the Starboard Seat" would make a great movie. As would "Saburo Sakai".

I'll give you that C.Evans!!! A poor WWII film back then is still gold compared to todays because they actually had actors who could act!!! I don't think I have ever disliked a film with Robert Mitchum in it!

And even they couldn't save it Carl. It could have and should have been better. For example, they could have done without the part about Charlton Heston's son's love interest with the Japanese-American girl, the bit part by Eric Estrada, who's scalp itched when "Japs are near" (that was so childish) and a few others that I can't remember now. To me now, it was underwhelming like "The Pacific", but when I saw it when I was a kid, it was cool, as was "The Battle of the Bulge."
