Just wondering what you guys might have as your oldest item owned? Mine is an 1848 Austrian/Tirol Campaign Medal from the Constitution War. Its got a triangular ribbon that is Green and White striped. Its content is made up with a good portion of Silver, I don't know what the other metal is? A few extra older items in the collection include: an 3 place ribbon bar from the Franco-Prussian War, four original Harpers Weekly newspaper front pages, and an 1870 EKII. Not much I admit but??? ;-))
Hi Skipper, that sounds like e great item. I've been thinking of picking up a few Imperial documents myself-while they are relatively cheap. Most of these have Royalty signatures and such on them,
Hey! I was gonna make a thread about this subject The oldest i have is a swedish bayonet from the 18 century.
Thanks Skipper, and looking forward to eying it ;-)) Collector, looking forward to seeing your Bayo. Is it a Spike? or a Blade Bayo? One I wouldn't mind having in my tiny collection is a US Army Trawel Bayonet with leather scabbard. Those things were pretty nasty if you were the unlucky recipient of it? ;-))
As promised Carl. "Citizen Michel Braun, 2nd compagnie, 3rd bataillon is requested to report on July 10th at 6 pm............ He will report fully armed and is begged not to leave the city until then . This march order was sent according to the bill which was voted and proclaimed last year on March 24th" Strassburg July 9th 1792. Capitaine Hagen.
Though it's a modern reproduction I have an American Civil War Campaign Medal. After that, the next oldest item I own is the Imperial German calvery sword I posted pics of in the Imperial German militaria thread.
i guess your right older then me anyway! ------------------- skipper that is just great that it has survived all this time
Roman ?? is that best ya can do skipper found this mid stoneage flint whilst digging out a trench mortar does this count
Hi Mike, don't know when or how I missed you posting your sword but ill go look for it. Skipper, great piece of history there. I could actually read some of it but darn that style of printing ;-)) Spotter, nice pieces both. Speaking of ancient coins-though I no longer own one but, I actually had a -and not sure if the spelling is correct? but, I had a 5, Cestercies coin at one time. I traded that sucker off about 12 or so yearsa go, for a Walther PP pistolen ;-)) I don't remember how old my coin was? but I was told it wat at least 2,000+++ years old. Now lets see who can come up with a proven oldest item here ;-)) I was planning on getting a nice document signed by a King which was signed ala about 1705, but I have other stuff more important to get before I seriously get into more vintage paper ;-))
I don't have that much militaria, but my oldest peice is an original Good Conduct Medal from WWII, still in basically perfect condition.
very cool thread gentlemen. oldest item(s) include a couple ancient Roman coins from the mideast when I was over there for a time. they are quite blackened most likely burned as this was the typcial case when towns/cities were sacked. will try and clean up and post a scan later. E ~
