On the positive side, everybody said Abdul's selfie looked great!

The only thing dumber is us telling the world that that's how we targeted them.

Exactly! Admiral King didn't hold a press conference to show off captured Enigma machine and code books.

I saw this story on Funker.
    I enjoyed this story.
Though I also thought; is this story actually true, or part of the attempt to generally damp down Daesh's massive soshul meeja activity. To sew uncertainty and cynicism about it's effectiveness & potential dangers among their commanders.

    S'cuse my cynicism.

They do need to keep our means of attaining intelligence a secret, this just undermines us.

I also thought about that as well, maybe showing the selfie wouldn't hurt.

Zigactly. It's not like it's a huge secret been blown into the open. ISIS and Al-Qaeda have been using this technique for a log enough themselves, you'd suspect it to be a sting. Walking around with a mobile phone should be a no-no.

You don't want to know the amount of info that can be gathered from a mobile phone through the Network.

It may not have been the selfie at all. They may be trying to protect an asset who tipped us off to the location.

As long as we can keep gaining intelligence from listening to their phone calls, then fine by me.

The official story kind of left me not believing the official story.

Despite the fact that this story kind of made my day, I'm the kind of person who has to see something to believe it. In this case, if I was able to see the picture, I would believe the story 100%.

I would hazard a guess that the location of the camp was "known", the question was whether it was occupied/in use. So when the "moron" took the selfie, he unwittingly answered the occupation/in use question. Then...Boom!

I saw the article on this and never really paid attention.... so, being bored today, I clicked on it....this is EXACTLY what I meant in my post
http://www.ww2f.com/topic/54831-ww2-intelligence-v-present/ ..it's about the intelligence services, but it relates to this story, being that, just like Dave55 said, in WW2 I think they kept their mouths shut more....this is unbelievable that they would blurt out like this....so they know we use social media, but now it's headline news, and mr dumbsh$T will be paying more attention
Kody has a good point....but the way they've been handling things, I don't know if that could be true

In World War II they kept there mouths shut more...

Not really. Read up on Senator Andrew J. May and his revelation to newspapermen concerning US submarines. Or, read up on Commander Morton T. Seligman & Australian reporter Stanley Johnston.

Secret revelations were made, either purposefully or accidentally, but back then there was no internet, so it took much more time for stories like these to get going. Also, there was much more respect for the Government back then, so if high government officials specifically asked to quash a story, the story was most often quashed. Nowadays things are quite different than 'were back in the 1940's.

we have a huge difference difference between civilians and military now and in WW2 ...
in WW2, 1. of course many more people were effected by the war because there were so many people in the military and their families..it was world wide ..more news, deaths, war production, more military hardware, etc..much more
    2. they knew the penalty of loose lips could mean disaster not only for the military but also at home
bombing of key targets, less food at the table if subs sank the supply ships, etc...food was rationed-tremendous reason to shut your mouth..and back then food was a lot harder to get....not like today.....I just saw in the news about water conservation, how much food Americans waste, and the water it takes to make that food
    3. I will add civilians were directly bombed, so this gives the civilians and military a tremendous reason to remember to keep their mouths shut...
    4. the horror of WW1 was fresh in their minds....
    5. there were daily reminders that a world war was on and being fought..especially for the Brits who were bombied every day or night..where as now, or even during the Iraq/Afgan wars, you didn't have the incessant reminders to keep your mouth shut, or that there was even a war in progress...

There will be an angle, there is always an angle. From personal experience the British military and Police PR never release anything unless it will help them. The British troops pissing on Iraqi's was a classic example. They denied it happened but would say how they knew until it was too late for the editor and them released the facts so he had no choice but to go.

    There's always an angle.
