The recent death of Marlin Brando brings to mind the question of who was the best actor ever? Brando was very good, but Robert DiNiro and Sir Lawrence Olivier get my vote.

Sorry, but I can't help laughing every time I see Shatner act. He always puts dramatic pauses between words, even if it's not dramatic.

Yeah, Shatner can't help it if he has to play in crappy movies with stupid scriptwriters. Ooh, hit a nerve there I guess. Well, you have to be honest.

Thank you me262 for mentioning Nicholas Cage and Robert Duvall, they are some of the best actors I know. Just missed them somehow.

The best actor is some one who makes you believe in the character, and is totally different to the person.

I would chose some one who has played many types of character.

Who has played comedy and serious and made you believe in both.

My initial thought goes to Micheal Crawford excellent comedy actor and good in the phantom of the opera.

My personal favorite is John Wayne, who seldom gets as much credit as I think he should. Check out his performances in "Red River" and "The Searchers" to see what I mean. He had a lot of depth.

Jack Nicholson's a good one too. Has anyone seen A Few Good Men? Bone-chilling role he played there.

Indeed some actors can only play one role, and therefore they never will be the best actor in the world. See Clint Eastwood for example, or Kevin Costner. And, I'm ashamed to admit, the great Tommy Lee Jones too.

Yeah!! with Steiger in "In the heat of the night"

What a film! What a pairing! You could feel the heat in your own front room.
