I want to know what you guys write to vets. I would like to write them but do not know exactly what you can ask for. Do you have some guidelines?
Volkbert : This may depend on what natonality you speak of. There was a thread.....last year ?, that a few of us started and dealt with your question from another poster on the forums. It was quite lenghty if I remember. Maybe Otto can find it and give the thread numerations for you. As it is do you know this veteran ?, if so have you built a trust relationship at all with him ? E
On the subject of writing vets, this last weekend saw the last ever reunion of Regiment "Der Fuhrer" take place due to the dwindling no of surviving veterans and those fit enough to travel to the reunions As my friend in the Regiment said,"We will no longer be known in History" So i'm posting once again just to say that if you want to correspond etc with veterans of any nationality now is the time to do it,militaria will be around for many years, the men who fought the war won't.Get writing everyone whilst we still have the chance!! I've been out of the loop here for awhile, but I'll add my .02 worth. Maybe it will get some discussion going again. When I write veterans it is about their personal views and experiences during the war. All the information I get goes to help out my living history group. Of course I can't help but ask them about their "war stories", but I concentrate on the more mundane items-what they wore in the field, rations, personal items they carried. Stuff like that. Of course, this was nearly 60 years ago and memory fades, so everything needs to be taken with a grain (or two) of salt, but for the most part it is valid info. I guess this type of information is known as "material culture". What should you ask for? Whatever your interest is I suppose. Wm.T.
