Written on the back says “Wednesday, March 18th 1942, Automatic Rifle”. Most likely referring to the Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR).
Notice that on the bottom of the target it says "1000 inch range". That's on the order of 25 meters. Most of the rounds missed the silhouette. I counted something like 25-27 hits, so if he fired two full magazines, some of the rounds didn't even hit the paper! That's the problem with full-auto fire.
First time I fired a BAR I was in 8th grade circa 1965-66 . . . it was literally a blast. Not on a range, but at sea and off the fantail of USS Wasp, blazing away at empty ammo crates and what not. Wasn't the only one firing, just the only one not in a uniform. All supervised by some rather stern faced NCOs from the Marine detachment.
I wish ! Best I can say is a few hundred rounds through an M1 carbine. Group was a bit more scattered though ! HEY I was 10 years old ! Tightened as I 'grew' into it.
That ain't bad shooting for a BAR, especially if it was on the "fast" full auto setting. The BAR is a bit of a pig to hold on target, with a weight of ~20lbs and a useless bipod slung off of end of the barrel which does nothing but degrade the already poor ergonomics.
One of my cousins (Mom's cousin actually) put a strap on the BAR with a loop for his foot. Never saw him shoot that rig but he came home alive, so there might be something to it.
