WW2 Frag Grenade Canister and ?? Need help

Hi Im brand new here, found this site looking for information on my latest find, haping maybe someone can help.

Pulling into my garage yesterday and I would have ran this right over if I didnt see it. Im assuming a squirrel or chipmunk knocked it down from somewhere.

It was pretty easy to find out what the canister was for and when it was used, but what is this thing inside it? Is this the actual inside of a dead grenade? I havent been able to find any pictures of what it is. Can anyone help me identify this thing View attachment 14701 ?

 

The other item looks to be the tail piece from a WW2 U.S. 60mm M49A2HE light mortar round.

Thank you very much, that seems to be exactly what it is. Odd how it fits directly inside the canister by coincidence and thats how it was stored all these years, I assumed they were closer related than that.
