WWII Australian Coastwatchers

    This post documents the contribution made by the Australian Coastwatchers during WWII.

    It must be noted that many Coastwatchers (mostly civilians), after their territory was overrun, were ordered by the he Royal Australian Navy to evacuate. Many declined to do so.

    In an attempt to provide them with some protection if captured, the Navy gave them military rank and badges of rank, but there was no optimism that the Japanese would treat Coastwatchers as prisoners of war.
