I'm am trying to figure out the serial number of a dog tag. However I am not finding information on a dog tag that only has 7 digits with no letter and hyphen in front. Any information would be helpful. Thank you.
Service numbers of US Navy enlisted personnel in WW2 had seven digits, no letters, no hyphens. Could be written XXXXXXX or XX XX XXX What is the number?
Welcome ATracy, any chance you can post a photo of the dog tag? Good to see you R Leonard, it's always good to see the sundowners avatar active on the site.
Wouldn't be so bad except for the thorns which occasionally rear their heads. I have to bite my tongue . . . err . . . restrain my fingers . . . to keep from crying aloud or shouting unpleasantries. Fortunately they usually get banned before I do either. Good to hear from you Lou!
Tracy, WWI serial numbers were seven digits. Many of the guys serving in WWI also served in WWII and kept their original serial number. (prior service, or continuous service) The dog tag didn't include the prefix RA, or US etc. does it have a T- That stands for the last tetanus shot shot and should have a two number date ie 42, 44, etc. Early tags had the soldier's home address but that was eliminated later in the war for fear the enemy could use it. Yes, as Otto said, please post a picture if possible.
Same for the USN. Once you were assigned a number, it was your number. You see that with folks with prior service, yes, even back to The Great War, who returned to active service in WW2. Looks odd when you see a LTJG with a four digit service number.
