Hi folks, New member here. I collect WWII photography and recently came across a great image of Canadian soldiers returning from the war. My knowledge of Canadian divisions, units etc. is limited to say the least. As you can see within the photo there are insignia and patches which should help identify to what unit these men belonged. Any detectives out there? My thanks in advance!
I knew I had seen that patch before, and after some searching, I found a match in the British 8th Infantry Division. However, that formation was disbanded in Palestine in 1940. The cap badge they're wearing looks to be Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps insignia. Perhaps they were an attached unit to the Brits during the war? http://www.petergh.f2s.com/flashes/8th-infdiv.jpg http://www.canadiansoldiers.com/insignia/caprcamc.jpg
The shoulder patch could be 21st Army Group. HQ personnel Found here: http://www.canadiansoldiers.com/insignia/formations/miscpatches.htm If above link doesn't work, the web site is "Canadiansoldiers, com" The patch is pictured under "Insignia" "Miscellaneous and Foreign 1939-1945" The 21st Army Group, WW2 British HQ commanding two field armies and supporting units. British and Canadian forces. assigned to Overloard, operated in Northern France, Luxembourg,Belgium, Netherlands and Germany. Cadillac's identification of the cap badge appears to be correct.
