    During the Spain's Civil War almost forty thousand men and women from fifty-two countries, including 2,800 Americans, traveled to Spain to join the International Brigades, American volunteers who risked their lives to fight fascism in Spain. The U.S. volunteers served in various units medical, combat, transportation and came to be known collectively as the Abraham Lincoln Brigade.

    The Lincolns came from all walks of life, all regions of the country, and included seamen, students, the unemployed, miners, fur workers, lumberjacks, teachers, salesmen, athletes, dancers, and artists. They established the first racially integrated military unit in U.S. history and were the first to be led by a black commander. At least 60 percent were members of the Young Communist League or CP. "Wobblies" members of the Industrial Workers of the World, socialists, and the unaffiliated also joined.

    Any problems with this link? I have 3 more that support the same information, I read Wiki and looks like some info is incorrect again.

    Spaniard;
    The incredible odyssey of Lincoln Brigadeer Irving Goff; Abraham Lincoln Brigade: Spanish Civil War History and Education: Irving Goff . As with most in the brigade Goff was a committed communist ("fighting for freedom" is a misnomer-they were "fighting for Stalinism"; ah well-you cannot doubt the hardcore Red's sincerity) and forbidden to serve in the US Armed Forces. This did not prevent the OSS from using him to wage guerrilla warfare behind NAZI lines in Italy. A partial ebook on the Lincoln Brigadeers; http://books.google.com/books?id=Q8...#v=onepage&q=lincoln brigade partisan&f=false
