I got an email out of the blue from a researcher in the Netherlands inquiring about a pair of dogtags he found, this thread is for one of those tags. For some context, read this thread here on Allen S. Taylor.

The tag image is attached, unfortunately the dogtag is in poor condition and had to reassembled. Here is the text on the tag according the current owner:

    Phillip A Nichols
    36456171 T 43 O
    Lottie Nichols
    527 Birch
    Lansing Mich P

More info will be posted here as I get it.

More on the location of discovery, info is from the person who found it.

The dogtags which I have found was near the road called “Waalstraat”at the place of Andelst.
This place is in the community called “the Over-Betuwe”.
    The district is called Gelderland.

The dogtag of Allen Taylor was laying a few meters off this road at the depth of about 20 cm
The dogtag of Phillip Nichols was about 600 meters further on and a hundred meters off the road at a depth of about 25 cm and a year after the first dogtag.

I've not had time to dig into google earth, and plan to do so later this evening.

Most likely U.S. 101st AB Division. They fought a stiff battle in Oct 1944 against the 363rd Volksgrenadier Division between Dodewaard and Opheusden, an area later nicknamed 'The Island'. Units involved were 327 GIR and 506 and 502 PIR.

See: 'Rendezvous with Destiny' pp. 379 and onward.

You were correct pistol, thanks for the help. I just found a reference to a Phillip A. Nichols as a BAR man in E/327 GIR. The reference is on page 217 of 101st Airborne: The Screaming Eagles at Normandy by Mark Bando.

I'd bet that is where Herr GroFaZ found the citation about Nichol's activity as a BAR man, GP.

Someone may be able to determin if the day the citation was awarded 31 January-1 February, was before or after the activity of 327 GIR in Holland. Anyone have access to an accoun to look up records on this soldier?
