With the prospect of an Annual vacation in Italy looming up, I'm intending to do a litle more reading about the airwar in Italy. I remember when I last went 6 years ago, photographing the heavily-strafed control tower at Castiglione del Lago and also finding other evidence of ground strafing in remote areas.

A surprisingly thinly-recorded element of WWII; with excpetions such as Duncan Smith's and Steinhoofs memoirs, plus Beale/D'Amico/Valentini's 'Airwar Italy 1944-45'.

Afraid I'm not going to Cassino or Anzio, No. 9 - off to Tuscany & the Chianti region ( ;) ), but not too far from the Trasimeno Line ......

I don't have an Italian map in front of me, but are any of these three museums near by ? Scroll down a bit to the three Italian flags.

They have some nice looking aircraft to take pictures of. (hint, hint) If not, have a great vacation anyway. :D :D

now this title is for one specific German unit but what a unit.

NSGr 9, Ghost bombers by English author : Nick Beale. Classic Publications.

what is a neat deal about his book is that other new info has been added on the unit flying the Ju 87D-3, D-5's late war over Italy via Nicks Web-site.

the book is well worth the price

Thanks for the link, Ta - but I'll be 'way South of there ( pity : I'd love to see those Macchi fighters... :( ).

Until Erich mentioned it, I'd never heard of Nick Beale's website. It's at ; -

I like the little manufacturers' plates.... ;)

Oh - and in London today, bought a copy of Jagdwaffe - Mediterranean 1943-45 which has lots of pics and information about Bf109Gs in Italy. Should make for some nice holiday reading..... [IMG]

Martin another 2 volumes to consider and I certainly will when the monies are in hand this summer.

Chris Goss: two soft bound books on the Luftwaffe Anti-Shipping units, both available now through Classic Pubs in your area. I will have to wait at least a month for volume 2 to come to town here in my spot of no return . . . :D

    Hello Martin,

There's also "The Air War Over Italy" by Andrew Brookes, Ian Allan Ltd, 2000. You could consider buying Chris Dunning's " Courage alone " but that would probably cost more as your holiday !!

    Regards,

Whoa - at this rate I'll need to charter my own aircraft to Italy just to be able to carry all the books..... ;)
