A list of the foreigners who flew in the Royal air force (1940 to 1945)

    Some times ago i asked a question on how many foreigners (outside of the commonwealth ) served as "mercenaries" within the R.A.F.

    With time and researchs i have made a list of the numbers, KIA and plane shot down by them, the list will be in the comments:

    Between 17 to 19,000 polish served in the royal air force, between 1940 and 1945, 1,800 were KIA during the entirety of the conflict of whom some 930 in the bomber command, at least 17 squadron bared polish named, the most famous of them was the "303rd Kościuszki" squadron who shot down more then 300 germans planes between 1940 and 1945, in total the poles shot down more then 900 planes and damaged 262 others

    During the war, some 1,900 belgians joined the Royal air force, some 252 were KIA between 1940 and 1945, the belgians shot down 200 german plane, and damaged 67 other including 47 V1. 2 RAF squadron were fully mained by belgian forces

    Some 2500 czecs served in the royal air force, of whom 1,200 flew in operation, some 500, were KIA between 1940 and 1945, 1/3rd were KIA in the bomber command in addition 41 airmen were P.O.W, some 4 RAF squadron were fully mained by czecs pilot . In total the Czecs squadron made 28,550 hours of operational flight and 129 german planes were either damaged or shot down by them.

    Between 1940 and 1943 (before the fusion of the free french forces with the ex vichy forces) some 3 to 5 thousands french served in the RAF both on the western and african front, 287 joined england in late 1940, 15 of whom fought in the battle of britain, 2/3rd of them wouldnt saw the end of the war, the free french shot down some 400 german plane and damaged 97 and 104 boat were sunk by the free french. In total between 1940 and 1943 600 free french lost their lives, 700 were wounded and 150 were P.O.W. France had 12 squadron who served under R.A.F control.

    Between 1940 and 1945, some 3,300 norwegians served in the R.A.F (of whom 120 officers), between 335 and 500 were KIA, some 250 danes also joined the norwegian in "little Norway" a norwegian based near Toronto. 5 fighter squadrons were fully maned by scandinavians. The 331 and 332 shot down some 170 planes, the Squadron 331 was the highest scoring squadron of southern england for the entirety of the war.

    A few hundreds of Greek pilot served in the RAF, between 69 and 87 pilots were KIA between 1942 and 1945, the 2 greek fighter squadron made 13,500 war mission, 32,000 hours of operational flight whilst the bomber squadron made 6,200 war missions.

    Between 1940 and 1945, some 1,500 dutch pilots served in the RAF, 3 squadron (2 fighter and 1 medium bomber) were fully maned by dutch pilot, also note that some flemish belgians served within the dutch forces.
