Former Navy Cmdr. Lloyd "Pete" Bucher, who commanded the spy ship USS Pueblo when it was captured by North Korea in 1968 and helped his crew survive months of brutal captivity, only to nearly face a court-martial back home, has died. He was 76. http://www.cnn.com/2004/US/West/01/29/obit.bucher.ap/index.html I can related to this whole story since I had served on a ship with a similiar mission.
Panzer, Fascinated by sigsint meself. Hadn't heard of Bucher till you mentioned it, but sorry to hear of his passing. Regards, Gordon
There was a whole regime of training as a result of what happened with the Pueblo. All of us had to go through it prior to serving on our ship. http://www.fas.org/irp/program/collect/cobra_judy.htm
Unfortunately, I worked on the ELINT side so my knowledge on the actual S-Band radar is limited. But from what I saw it in action, it was awesome. My understanding is that there is a huge version in Nevada used by NASA. [ 30. January 2004, 07:52 AM: Message edited by: PzJgr ]
This is sad to hear. One of the librarians working at this library I come to all the time, her husband knew the Captain. [ 30. January 2004, 02:50 PM: Message edited by: C.Evans ]
Yes I remember the Pueblo being captured and then awhile later an EC-121 was shot down by the Koreans. As far as I know the US did nothing back to the Koreans.
