    Split from "Firefly phobia"

Merlin, I would put a copyright disclaimer on those just to protect them. We've all seen what can happen to photo's that are posted and then start appearing on web sites wthout due credit.

As regards copyright on photo pics, I personally don't think there is much you can do about it in the long run, the internet is so vast and what could you do?, we all copy photos posted if they interest us, how much difference would the copy right sign make? I certainly don't have the technical knowledge to prevent it. As all my photos are over 50 years old does it matter?
    Errrrrr! what's a watermark?

Merlin let me show you. http://www.armourinfocus.co.uk/sentinel/index.htm
Click on the link and look at the pictures. The watermark is the writing on the pictures. When it goes on the picture it is mostly see throught, therefore ytou can still see the picture quiete clearly. Not all watermarks look that way as on the link provided.

Thank you Hoosier, I've looked at it, see what you mean, BUT it doesn't stop me copying it! as can anyone, the same as many pics that are posted on this forum.
(by the way, did you receive the Challenger2 email I sent you?)

It doesn't stop people copying them for their own purposes, but it does make it damn obvious that they have been nicked if they do so and try to pass them off on their own websites as their own.

I must apolagise for splitting the Firefly thread, can I suggest that if anyone has tips re. copyrighting photos we could perhaps take it away from the tanks thread and post it elsewhere? Moderator?

    Watermarking Pictures

Merlin, do you have any photo editing software? If you have a scanner you probably do have. This all you would need to watermark pictures. Just open the picture in the editor and look for the typing tool. When you find it you should just need to click on it to select and then click on the photo to start typing. There should be the option to select font, colour and luminosity etc. Once your message is typed you can usually drag it around to locate it where you want. See my pics at www.pedg.co.uk for unobtrusive copyright notice. This was done in Adobe Photo delux (not photoshop).

I think IrfanView (a freebie editor) also has this feature.

If you wanted i could even do it for you.

Regarding the copyright your still alive (leastwise your still posting) and the author of the pictures so you still have copyright so far as I'm aware.

Aha! Seek and ye shall find indeed

Thank you, bit too clever for me, I'm always amazed if it (PC) starts up first time. But, maybe the 10 year old girl next door will help, I will have a go, but I'm not too worried, better the pics be used and be of help to young people than end up in a car boot.

Do note, that many countries' copyright laws specifies that copyright on photographic images only last 50 years from the end of the year the image was taken.

Personally, I watermark all my photographs. It doesn't prevent them from being stolen, but it makes it a lot easier to convince the host of various websites to close down the website.

This is the sort of photo that I have, a 'working' Comet in the Canal Zone, note the commanders 'blade vane' sight of which I have read nothing on this forum, I haven't got the 'writing' on pic business weighed up yet, but will suceed.

Brilliant. I'm working on it. my combined scanner/printer is Lexmark, I can find colour, pencil etc but nowt about typing. My copyright name would be 'Brian.S711.', in any case a lot of my pics are joint ones, some taken by mates and passed on so I don't have the copyright on them, but certainly interested in sorting out this typing on them.
Here's another from the Canal zone.

That's the ticket! Your definitely on the right path. I retried IrfanView and found it to be simple in this program but without the fancy wrap effects in my example earlier.

Just be aware, that if your watermark is just in the middle of nowhere, you picture will just be cropped and posted online nonetheless.

Have a look at the watermarks at Panzerphotos.dk - all of the watermarks are placed so that they can't be removed without damaging the main motive.

Merlin just wondering how is it going with the watermark? Did you create one that you are gonna use?
