German Regiment numbers on shoulderboards

Hey everyone i am new to this forum and already have a question. I am recreating a Oberfeldwebel from the 352nd division 916th regiment but they fought on D-Day at Omaha beach but i was wondering did they still use Regiment numbers on there shoulderboards in 1944?

i heard from some friends that the removed because of camouflage in the early 40s but some still wore it but it was self choice so please help out to get my uniform 100% historical accuracy.
