Thanks again. I will update when I start digging and receiving information.
Question. I am waiting for the VA to get back to me with my grandfather's claim file. In the meantime I was just thinking about the eastern mandates unit credits you posted previously. Would it be possible to track down the list of units that were given credit for his other two campaigns? (Western Pacific and Central Pacific.) I realize these lists are much larger but perhaps I can narrow down significantly since the eastern mandates you sent is smaller. Just a thought. Thanks again for your info on this.
JZ, I do have the Western Pacific unit list. But it's too large to embed here, I'll PM you and we can find out a way to get it to you. Unfortunately, I don't have a copy of the War Department General Orders 85 (1945), where apparently the Central Pacific campaign units are listed.
In terms of comparing the three campaigns...yes, I agree that in a perfect world it would all line up. The unit in question would be one of the few that was present for all three. And hopefully that ends up being the case for you. But there is also a chance the unit may have been re-organized or he was transferred to a different unit between campaigns. Again, though, hopefully not.
Thank you very much for your help. I was able to download and view the document. I will compare and see what I can find. I appreciate your assistance. I will post if I am able to narrow it down. Thanks again
Please do keep us updated. I'm enjoying this thread.
So I took the two GOs Manilla provided and started to eliminate those who were not on both lists. This narrowed it down to 40 units. In doing a simple Google search, I found a gold mine of information in a PDF document titled "Unit citation & campaign paticipation credit Register" on www.mobileradar.org. This 400+ page document lists all units in ww2 and the campaign credits issued. I checked one or two to see if they matched the GOs Manilla sent and by God they did. Therefore I went through the 40 units I had narrowed it down to previously and looked to see which units were given credit for central Pacific as well. There were 7 of the 40. (It should be noted that the list did not include bomber, bombardment and fighter squadrons, just ground). I now just need to figure out how to research each of these units individually and see what they did and where they were. They are listed as follows:
27th Signal Company, Detachment (27th infantry division)
34th engineer combat battalion, company D
91st Chemical company, Detachment
111th infantry regiment
400th signal company, aviation
443rd signal construction battalion, company A
727th Ordnance company, Detachment
I suppose if I confirm that none of them are it, my next step would be to go through the 400 page document and look for others. Let me know if anyone has any suggestions going forward to research these units. Thanks
