Just been contacted by the webmaster of this new site, which only went on-line today. I am not an expert on the Dams, but it looks an interesting and promising site to me.

Would be interested to see what Martin and Eric think - and all you others!

    Worth checking out at:

Interesting idea, let's see how it develops. A lot of work is obviously going into it, but just now ( and hey, I know it's only Day 1 ) it's a little uninspiring.

So much info is very readily available about the Dambusters that he's going to need something 'new' and maybe a dedicated forum....

In the intervening decade since this topic was poste, http://www.thedambusters.org.uk/ has evolved into one terrific website and forum.

Just discovered this other forum. Dambusters Weblog | A blog about the RAF’s 617 Squadron during the Second World war

A little snip of personal interest to me.

Fred Sutherland, the front gunner in Les Knight’s aircraft, AJ-N – the aircraft which dropped the mine which broke the Eder Dam obliged with an almost immediate definitive response:

"There were bags under each gun to catch the spent cases. There were several reasons for this.
First, each gun fired 20 rounds a second and even with a short burst the empty cases soon built up a great pile.
Then there was at times, the violent evasive action where the empties could get air borne and foul up the works.
In the front turret which was designed for one person they would have showered down on the B/A.
After a long burst [of fire] the cases became very hot."

    Dam Busters Remembered

Collection of news reels honoring the 617 Sqd,
The one with Guy Gibsons wife being interviewed is particularly sad in retrospect.

Fred Sutherland missed the King's congratulations to the crews.
He was in the midst of his escape through the lowlands to Spain and Portugal.

That's excellent, Fred - many thanks indeed for posting the link. I've seen brief clips before, but never the entire newsreel ; and I've never seen the interview with Eve Gibson.

And you have to say, Dave Shannon looks about 16 years old..................
