Trying to understand the make-up and duties of the Headquarters Company in the 1st Battalion of 67th Armored Regiment.
Looking through the history of the 67th I ran across a mortar platoon, an intelligence & Reconnaissance platoon of headquarters company--what other platoons did they have? I thought their primary mission was administrative.
    thanks for any help

In WWII the US Army Headquarters Company was usually contained the support elements for the battalion level but not so much at the Regiment level. The HQ Company is also not the same as the Headquarters which consisted of the Commander, XO and Sergeant Major with a couple of drivers. Most Battalion level HQ companies contained the Supply Platoon, Commo Platoon, Recon Platoon (if Mechanized or Armored), Mortar Platoon (if Mechanized), and General Support Platoon (if Mechanized). In a non-Mech Infantry unit there was a separate Support Company which had the Heavy Weapons (MGs and Mortars), while the HQ Company still retained the Commo Platoon,Supply, and Transport platoons. Of Course in the Airborne HQ Company they had all the Heavy Weapons (MGs and Mortars) and Commo Platoon and the Regimental Service Company had all the Supply and Rigging functions.

After WWII the HQ and HQ Company were combined to make it more administrative and a separate Support Company and Heavy Weapons Companies were added to make things more standardized.

Thank you so much. This is exactly what I needed. I'm helping a lady who's father was in Headquarters Company of the 1st Battalion, 67th Armored Regiment. I didn't know what role he may have played--think I can narrow it down to the recon platoon.
    Happy Holiday,
    Dave
