I've been flicking over to Radio4 aswell Kelly, Ken Bruce and Steve Wright just don't do it for me, (both tossers whose idea of a good record is Robbie Williams, Tina Turner or Luther Vandross) - and Jeremy Vine is starting to grate a bit. :lame:
I heard some of the stuff on Riefenstahl, they were discussing her and then a play or something started that was based on her life I think. It was excellent but I had to get out of the damned car soon after it started. :realmad:
Sorry I haven't got time to look at these long vids ATM but just to say it's also topical with the infamous Bryan Ferry comments mentioning her. I'll check "Listen Again" on the R4 website I think, good shout mate! :thumb:

EDIT: Hey it's there, "Book Of The Week" on this link, narrated by Kenneth Brannagh, it's riveting, and way way better than Steve Wright...
:D Only thursday and friday are still working atm.

I listened to it all, Dave, I'd never heard of her but had obviously seen her work (Nuremburg Rallies etc). They capture the moment imperiously.

Triumph of the Will was basically a showpiece for the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Leni Reifenstahl was popular with the Nazis. It was of course a powerful propaganda tool to show the Aryan "Master" Race to be superior. US Athlete Jesse Owens rather spoilt Hitler's party by winning a shed load of Gold Medals by beating so called "Superior" German Athletes in the games though :ponder:

I actually once uploaded the full version of this Nazi Propaganda fim. Just for Historical Educational porpuses onto my YouTube Channel once. YouTube still decided to nail me with a copyright cstrike, before they decided to put a violation of their Hate speech policies. I even put in the video, for the viewer to view this video with a responsible mind and that the video was for education poroses. That I would not tolerate neo-nazis viewing this video. Youtube struck me with that hate speech violation. It is just something me any other History buffs and majors have to deal with. For making sure people don't repeat History nad make another person like Hitler become a thing again. Heck I have lost friendships over my interest in Hitler and the nazis, just because those friends were paraniod. That other poeple might think of them as neo-nazis, if I talk to them or around them about or mention the words Hitler or the Nazis. When did history have to white-wash itself for people to change it to their liking so they don't find any hurt when learning and hearing about history. well that how a person like Hitler and people like the Nazis love History to be like.

I actually saw a showing of it in college in the 1970s, back when you could show interesting examples of history and filmmaking; of course we can't have anything politically incorrect these days.

It's like Birth of a Nation, excellent example of the filmmaker's art but telling a deplorable story. Also illustrates how people can be taken in by propaganda.

Tell me about it, i am suffering right now through my college I am attending at currently. I am even at the college campus right now. It is bad over here, since I can never talk about anything History related here or mention Hitler or the nazis at all. and I am a bloody History major at the college. Plus to top that all off I am a very broke suffering college, having to depend on the other students for handouts. Since the college is so politically correct tiis not even funny, that the college let me be left behind begging for money. Well at least in close to 8 months I will transfer and graduate from this college and go off to university. It does make life here on campus pretty lonely. Heck even friends of mine have left me and or have been chased off by other students, just for doing something nice for me and buying me lunch. It's like the college I pay tuitition to, acts like I am Adolf Hitler, or seen as a burden some bum to these other students (who party way more then they study). Plus being on the Autism spectrum with Asperger's syndrome, and a History buff is a life of watching history documentaries alone in the library.

President Woodrow Wilson after a screening at the White House said of "Birth of a Nation", “It is like writing history with lightning, and my only regret is that it is all so terribly true.” Cultural and political mores* change over time, while we don't have to accept or agree with their perspective, nor should we, it is a historical fact, so it should be seen and discussed. We should not hide it away because we are afraid it will hurt our modern sensibilities. Despite archaic views and perspectives, the film was a triumph from a technical aspect, introducing many techniques to the art of film making.
