I checked the 180th Infantry Regiment history book, but it is woefully short on detail, and therefore is not much help. However, I did find a picture of the 4th Platoon of B Company. You may see a familiar face in the 3rd row.

Thanks very much for sending that picture. I guess from the beginning of this thread there is no AAR for the time of the action that my father was decorated for, being in Jan of 1945. I do have a scan of the 'flimsy' report and that may be all that an AAR entails. Unfortunately it does not include names of any other soldiers. I tried to upload but the pdf seems too large.

Hi Everyone! My name is Christian Durante. I am the grandson of my own Hero Grandpa, Private Angelo J. Durante. I am assembling a World War II Scrapbook of my Grandfather's Experiences during World War II. NARA recently sent me two pages of information that didn't contain much information.

I was wondering if someone can help find some information of my grandfather experiences in the 180th Infantry. They sent me a AG 210.5 Form from the Headquarters of the 180th Infantry. It says the following:

    Headquarters of the 180th Infantry
    Office of the Regimental Commander
    APO 45 Postmaster
    New York, New York

    July 25th, 1943,

Subject: Award of the Purple Heart
    To: Individuals Concerned

They list 11 people concerned: My Grandfather is listed as follows:

Pvt. Angelo J. Durante, 32197612, Company "B", 180th Infantry, for wounds received in action near Biscari, Sicily, 17th of July 1943. (Medal No. 214200). Purple Heart with Oak Leave Cluster

Can someone search the After-Action Reports or 180th Archives and see if my Grandfather is mentioned. I am looking to collect any WWII Paperwork on him for the family scrapbook.

I followed his footsteps and joined public service. I am serving my country as Federal Employee in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and volunteer as U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.

Grandpa Angelo Durante Enlisted in the U.S. Army on February 4th, 1942 in Camp Upton Yaphank, New York.
He was honorably discharged on September 27th, 1945. His separation center was Fort Dix, New Jersey.
His last rank and grade and unit was Technician, Fifth Grade. 3485 Ordinance Company.

His Battles and Campaigns on his Honorable Discharge was the following: North Apennines, Naples-Foggia, Sicily, Rome-Arne.

    My questions:

    1. Can anyone find some photos or information on him in any books or websites that you come across?

    2. What is a Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster? He received 2 Purple Hearts. Both have 3 stars on them.

    3. What did the 3485 Ordinance Company do during WWII?

4.He also got wounded in October 1943 in Italy. I have no paperwork on that?

    5. I have a award certificate saying he completed training as a Infantryman of a Heavy Weapons Company during the period of February 13th, 1942, to May 16th, 1942, at the Infantry Replacement Center Training Center at Camp Croft, South Carolina. It says his training unit was Co. D, 30th Infantry Training Battalion. What is this training and company about? What was Camp Croft?

    6. Grandpa Angelo Durante also Earned the Bronze Star Medal during the Naples Foggia Campaign. I really want to know what he specifically or generally did to earn the medal. Would the After-Action Report List That? Can someone find the medal Justification.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Sincerely,

    Christian Durante

    Pvt. Angelo Durante.

I found him in the embarkation roster of B Company, 180th Infantry Regiment, 4 June 1943.

In the 3 January 1944 Company Roster, he is listed as Wounded in Action and Dropped from Rolls, effective
    8 December 1943.

The Bronze Star for Meritorious Service is a generic award given to many GIs for steadfastness and diligence over
    many months of service.

Hi Dave!!! This is priceless and so important to my family. Your response was printed and added to my WWII Grandpa Angelo Durante Family Scrapbook.

I am very excited that you found him and showed your response to my family. I do have a couple of questions. Would you be able to send a picture or copy of the original documents to me. If so, I can provide my email, or you can post here if you are comfortable. The embarkation roster and the company roster?

Thanks for the Bronze Star Medal Clarification! So, I followed Grandpa's Lead and Decided to Join Public Service! I have been a Federal Employee with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for 6 years as a Administrative Operations Specialist. Unfortunately, with my job and clearance, I am unable to have a social media presence especially with Facebook. Thats why I was wondering if I can receive a copy of the Rosters. It would be amazing to have for the scrapbook.

I appreciate this a lot. I wonder what Grandpa Angelo did before and after his wounds. Someone told me he was sent to a hospital in Italy like 3 times and then they sent him back to battle. It was like they needed any troops who were still standing to fight!

Federal employees can indeed and do use Social Media.

I should know. I'm a retired Fed (DoD).

Nice your DOD. I am DHS. I didn't know that. Just something my supervisors told me when I started. I am not going to start now lol. I am hoping Geoff includes copies of the rosters in his presentation to me soon?

I really enjoyed learning about supplemental information on here about Grandpa. It is a shame that they just stopped those DOD Retiree Civilian ID Cards Just now. You were lucky.

    What is your email, Christian?

I will swap you the rosters for the AG 210.5 Form you received from the NARA St. Louis.

I have transcribed all of the 764 General Orders issued by HQ, 45th Infantry Division.
My list has over 13,000 names.

I spent Wed. thru Friday of this week at the NARA II, College Park, examining and scanning the
General Orders issued by various Hospitals in the MTO and ETO, specifically looking for Purple
    Heart awards to Thunderbirds.

The gap in my PH research is Sicily through December 1943.

So your AG Form with PHs would be welcome indeed.

Your Dedication is Appreciated. The NARA never sent these kinds of records back to me. I have a feeling they really don't dig as much as they can as good as individual dedicated researchers do.

    Dave[/QUOTE]

    Dave,

I am interested in any AAR or other reports available for 180th Company G from Sicily through the end of November 1943. My Uncle Cecil Verboort was Reported MIA on 11/4/1943 and Later changed to KIA. As it turns out his were the only remains not ID'd or returned from his company. I have a significant background on him and maps showing where his remains were suppose to be but the Mark is like 3 miles from where the battle was. So basically I am just trying to figure out as best I can as to the where and when. And maybe get a picture of what is travels entailed.

    Thank you

    Norm
