    Hi McRis

    I pronounce it as oss-e-an

The original Ossian was a celtic bard (teacher / diplomat / hero / all-round good guy) out of Irish legend and, being a former teacher and with a name that always gets taken, I use Ossian as a forum nick name. Its also the name of my consultancy company, different enough to be memorable.

Now, shall I count that as a question?

Please no. I made the question just to make sure that question 8 was not wasted.(i had in mind a warship that was pronounced like your name so it made sense).

small time out and put all the information together.
we have a british battleship, pre WW 1, that was sunk by accident by another british battleship.

okay, next question. is it a ship that sailed around in the days of Horatio Hornblower?

    Question 10: No
(Hornblower is a fictional character so I assume you mean at the time of the French Wars (1792-1815)

Your summary is more or less correct -- it could still be inter-war.

    Yes, you have it, Notmi.
HMS Victoria, sunk off Tripoli (Lebanon) in 1893 after an unfortunate incident involving turning radii and strict obedience to orders. 358 officers and men were lost.

btw, her commander (on the sick list that day) was one John Jellicoe. Fortunately he got off, but history might have been very different....
The wreck was found recently in a vertical (bow down) position.
