Here's a little tidbit of information I came across recently. A 144th FA Assn. WWII yearly newsletter from 1969.

This is the obituary of Col. Clifford B. Cole.
He assumed command of the 144th Field Artillery Regt. in the Spring of 1942 at Ft. Lewis.1943 He assumed command of the 144th Field Artillery Group, consisting of the 980th and 981st Field Artillery Battalions, through the reorganization of the regiment. He remained commander until 1946, when he was made commander of Dachau during the Nuremberg trials.

Here's a picture of Col. Cole during desert training in California 1943. Think I've posted this before in a 980th FAB thread but seems to fit here also.
