Its such a pleasure to be able to pick little cultural differences on these forums... In Australia, bringing a gun to university would be unthinkable, as would ice skating with a holstered gun... If you did such a thing you'd be lucky not to be arrested, let alone asked politely to leave the premesis... Hoosier, I was reading your story expecting your friend to get crash tackled by SWAT, as thats exactly what would happen over here Wearing a uniform, you can carry what you like, however... I guess thats why we may never agree on the 'gun issues'
Actually I thought a bit about it, and I don't see why you judge the girl so harshly... If someone went ice skating with a gun I would've kicked him out quick smart too, and not so polietly...Seriously, what kind of clod goes ice skating with a holstered gun? Probably exactly the kind of person who trips up, out falls the gun and 'bang'... Real $%&@ing smart thing to do there, mate... Then theres the fact that he wasn't in uniform... He hasnt' told anyone that he's got a gun...He's concealing it... He's ice-skating with the damn thing... Anyone with half a brain cell is going to be a little suspicious... "Legally entitled" or not, unless he had a badge I'd be far more inclined to think that he was either a criminal, or just really really stupid... I mean ice-skating with a gun?!? Just the fact that he's carrying one around 'out of uniform' is bad enough... Its not a very professional thing to do, not the kind of thing I'd expect of a Police officer...
women can be extremly silly when it comes to firearms ..its ironic ..almost all of my male freinds own at least one firearm ..almost all the women attached to those men find guns rather frightful and alien ..ive seen on several occasions , women pick up a husbands handgun useing only two fingers and hold it at arms length as if it were a zip lock baggie full of dog turds ,wanting it removed from sight ,please.....women ,bless their sweet little souls ...just plain dont like weapons ...and the irony is , a gun is the only thing that can stop a 200 lb man bent on doing a woman bodily harm if she is alone ..go figure ....SMEG ,did you say that students an v.t. are allowed to carrie concealed firearms on campus ?..are you sure , i would be suprised to find that any campus anywhere in the usa allowed this sensible practice in this ever so p.c. day and age ..even in va or texas ..i saw an article where a straight A STUDENT , a fifth grade girl was suspended ( kicked out )for 5 weeks for haveing a small kitchen knife in her lunch bag ,her mom had provided (with a fork ) to cut up a cooked peice of chicken..ever so p.c. zero tolerance for weapons on campus you see..the hysterical nanny state at work...
Its ridiculous isnt' it Woody... Psycho-killer goes on gun rampage, while little girl is expelled for bringing spork to school... Hey! You're the one who said... ...So I thought you meant that it was a generally acceptable practise that guns be kept in universities... Why give people the rights to bring weapons to school when its only psychopaths who exercise that right? I mean, the children can't even defend themselves with sporks!!!
noooo.....what i said was ,IF someone like my brother was there in that classroom ,that slimy little peice of shit in the boy scout uniform would very likely have been shot dead after killing only 3 or 4 schoolgirls instead of reloading at leisure and shooting 33 ...and smeg modern guns do not go bang when dropped on ice or anything else , from ANY height.....old single action revolvers from custers indian fighting days could IF dropped directly on the hammer ,sometimes discharge ..this is why prudent cowboys carried only five bullets in their six shooters ...really smeg ..no wonder your so afraid of guns ,you apparently know as much about them as the wives who hold them up with two fingers (they too are afraid of guns )..much like the very silly and ignorant woman at the skating rink ...btw .smeg , i do have great respect for your general knowlege on most other things ...but what is a SPORK?
Not to sound like a smart-ass, but that's why it's referred to as "off-duty" carry. Depending on how you carry, you can do lots of things. Skating shouldn't be an issue. Personally, I can't do too much athletically, as mine is a clip on. I don't have a holster. I will admit that perhaps I judged her too harshly. I realized that if she saw it, then it wasn't concealed like it ought to have been. Of course, that's based on our rules here for off-duty weapons. Woody, a spork is one of those silly things you'll find in some fast-food restaurants. It looks like a spoon, but it has tines cut into the end like a fork. Silly, really, but generally effective.
Correct me if I am wrong, as I'm never quite sure about the American system of grades, but isn't grade 5 below 18? The idea I imagine is to prevent kids having weapons, particularly at school. While it can be taken to extremes, is that batter than allowing children/teenagers to sneak knives into school under the pretence of 'it's for my lunch'. Virginia Tech, on the other hand, is for 18+ (ie: adults). A whole different kettle of fish.
kindergarden thru 6th year is elementry ...7,8th graders middle school (monsters ) ...9th thru 12 is high school // .from the time i was in about sixth grade i almost always carried a pocket knife ..in high school here in cali 72 -74 it was the style to were a heavy buck folding knife on ones belt with a 4 or 5 inch blade ..and practice quick draw at lunch time ect ...many fistfights but no one ever was stupid enough to draw their knife in anger ..us upper middle class white kids not being eager to spend our lives in prison ...at home we all had guns too ...same rule applied though ..guns for shooting or hunting ..fists for settleing manners of honour ect....seems simple enough to me ...escalateing to knives or guns brings death ,cops ,prison and of course a response in kind ...ironic that now all campuses in america are weopon free but we now have all these killings on school grounds...weopons prohibition sure is working good ,huh....
Trouble is, that only works where everybody follows that rule. These days itseems that people are more willing to use weapons. Presumably because they give you an advantage in a fight. Who needs honour when you can win?
I think it'd be a great idea to have 'campus cops'... I'm not afraid of guns... I just have a healthy respect of them, whereas some people (like boy scout) seem to respect em a little more than human life itself... I don't believe they should be brandished outside of hunting, sport, and "in the line of duty"... Seriously what else do you need them for? Looking tough'? :kill: I'm well aware guns have safeties, its not the guns I don't trust... Its the people... The kind of guys who go ice skating with their guns, you'd expect them to leave the safety off (you know, in case a robber busts his way in) turns out it just happens to be a lil' old lady who was in a hurry, whoops! Extreme example, but you'd be suprised just how stupid people can be, even without guns! You call what America has 'weapons prohibition'? Cricket bat should do just fine... be proportional... six and out! I guess things are just way to different for us; carrying aronud a knife or gun might be the 'style' in America, but here its asking, no, begging for trouble... from the police if you're lucky... you'll get a few snickers about 'compensating for something'... But cultural differences aside I'm sure we can agree on one thing these F***ers need to be stopped  [/i]
smeg: An interesting aside to the events of the week... ----------------------------------- Virginia HB 1572, which would have allowed handguns on college campuses, died in subcommittee. A bill that would have given college students and employees the right to carry handguns on campus died with nary a shot being fired in the General Assembly. House Bill 1572 didn't get through the House Committee on Militia, Police and Public Safety. It died Monday in the subcommittee stage, the first of several hurdles bills must overcome before becoming laws. The bill was proposed by Del. Todd Gilbert, R-Shenandoah County, on behalf of the Virginia Citizens Defense League. Virginia Tech spokesman Larry Hincker was happy to hear the bill was defeated. "I'm sure the university community is appreciative of the General Assembly's actions because this will help parents, students, faculty and visitors feel safe on our campus." Most universities in Virginia require students and employees, other than police, to check their guns with police or campus security upon entering campus. The legislation was designed to prohibit public universities from making "rules or regulations limiting or abridging the ability of a student who possesses a valid concealed handgun permit ... from lawfully carrying a concealed handgun." ----------------------------------- Keep in mind that the Virgina Tech campus police force is unarmed. Had campus officers confronted the shooter, they would have simply become additional victims. How does an un-armed police-officer protect himself, let along the general population? Tim
Smeg: Just to clarify... Individual was an off-duty law officer. His "concealed-carry" was in a hip-bag, zippered out of sight. Said hip-bag is prominent however, and the manager speculated... saw his maglite flashlight-holder perhaps. Put two and two together. He was with his small son, teaching him to ROLLER-skate. Not a high-energy workout by any means. He carries a semi-auto Glock .40. Safety is part of the trigger assembly. Very safe carry. I'm not certain what normal procedure is--Perhaps Tom can comment from Law Enforcement perspective--if officers are instructed to keep a live-round chambered, or whether chamber is clear when carrying. Fact is, he is trained and a competent gun-handler. While YOU might panic and shoot [at] an old-woman at the roller-skating rink, I'm confident this individual would not. CRICKET BAT? I thought you Aussies had outlawed those too. Fact is--and obviously lost in translation--that most US establishments are quite pleased to have a law officer on their premises. On-duty or off-duty. Uniform or no uniform. (Sometimes plain-clothes are actually preferred.) Indiana State Police troopers used to be allowed to take their cars home, and drive them when off-duty. (Not certain if this is still common practice.) The rationale being that a marked police car makes a strong statement to criminals by it's very presence. --------------- It's clear that mindsets concerning gun ownership are much different in your country compared to mine. I was somewhat incredulous that the Australian people would give-up up such an important freedom so easily. (One mass-shooting and the nation disarms?!) Rest assured I wouldn't trade places with you for anything. Tim
Ricky: Please explain "Poms" to me. Is this a reference to the little ball or "pom" on an englishmans' beret? This "colonial" is without a clue as to it's reference or meaning. Tim
can I just ask on this. Every Amarican has the right to bear arms, fine you seem happy with this, but he wasn't American was he, he was South Korean? This means that a guy from anywhere in the world could turn up in America and just buy a gun? Cool get me on the first plane I don't particulary want to get involved in the pro and cons of gun control though this if everyone had one he wouldn't have been able to kill so many people arguement worries me as it would represent a reverse of society back to the chaotic realms of the wild west and Dread wastelands worries me FNG
Pom is the term Aussies use to refer to us Brits, apparently it is supposed to stand for Prisoners Of her Majesty and originates in the Victorian era(Since in Victorian times undesirables were sentenced to be deported to Australia this doesn't really make sense though, by that reasoning the Aussies should be the Poms so I have my doubts over that explanation).
