Greenfrog, I would love to read what you have. My father was in an AAA unit before he was converted to infantry. I'm always on the look out for more information. He died in 1990 before I thought to talk to him about his experiences.

dave many thanks i do have children and grand children who are computer literate i'll try to get them to come over to my house and show me how to do something. i did find the name of the publisher, who was in bad reichenhall, germany. their web page indicates they are still in business and i asked a friend who lives in saltzburg to try to get in touch with them and see if in their archives t6hey might have some copies of the book they like to donate to us.

you mentioned 300dpi and office max ---i have no idea what these things are. i did mention that i'm not that sharp with computer oriented things.

believe it or not , the 431st was converted to infantry when they arrived in Corsica from Sardinia. as soon as we arrived in Corsica our trucks and guns were taken away from us and it was announced that we were to take infantry training . we did train for about two months and then all of a sudden our trucks and guns were returned to us and we were told that we were to join in the invasion of southern France, which we did. your father may have been part of our coversion.
any information that you feel might be helpful to you , if i have it, i'd be happy to share it with you.

It would be great if the German publisher had a copy and could scan it as a pdf.

If not, your kids or grandkids would need to get a scanner and scan the pamphlet
in Adobe Acrobat at, ideally, 300 dots per inch. That will produce a very good
digital copy.

By the way, my uncle's 214th AAA was in Corsica for nine months during the war.
They arrived there from Sicily and then went to Southern France in Sept. 1944.

I may have found a copy at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Library. Still figuring out how to order or download. Anyone else want to try??

Roger, I don't believe you can buy it there. I think it only shows what libraries own a copy. The nearest one to me is over 220 miles away.

Greenfrog, my father was converted to infantry after Salerno. It is unlikely that you and he were converted together. Tell us what you can, anyway.

Yeah I knew I couldn't buy but thought it might be "down-loadable". The page I found showed Available status and email or print options, none of which I understood or tried. The link I put up doesn't work either, but takes you to a page before the access to the library. If that makes sense? Might be worth an email to the Urbana-Champagne Library.

this is greenfrog calling again.
i just found out from a Staples store that they will print one copy of the booklet for $17.10. this would be plus sales tax and postage. also if we would want a spiral binder that would be extra. if we wanted more than there would be some kind of a discount.
now i don't know how to handle this. how do i get this info to all that might be interested.?
how to they know what kind of a book i'm talking about. ?
is there a better way to handle this, if so what is a better way ?

you said that you'd help out. boy i sure need help.

if e-mail would be helpful, just let me know and ill give you my address.

Is the Staples' quote for:

1. A color copy of the booklet?

2. A B&W copy of the booklet?

Do not get a binder for it.

If the quote is for a color copy, I recommend
you get that.

I'm willing to scan the copy of the booklet and
convert it into an Adobe Acrobat pdf, which can
then be emailed in one or multiple parts.

If you concur, you can send me a PM and I will
provide my address.

I think Dave's idea is the best route. If someone could scan the booklet there would be no cost involved. I emailed Urbana-Champaign library and received this in response:

Good morning Roger. The catalog record refers to a physical copy only and I could not find any record of an electronic copy of this book. The book is also located in the University’s long-term storage facility so it is not as easily accessible as it would be in the open stacks of the library.

I would begin by contacting your local library to see if a request can be made to borrow the book through WorldCat. It may be possible and would certainly save you a trip. Another alternative would be to contact the University library at 217-333-2290 to be connected with the appropriate staff member that can advise you.
I hope this information is helpful in your search for the book. Best of luck! Cindy

They have a copy but looks like a few loops to jump through to get it.

Dave's idea sounds good. Get it scanned once, then let him turn it into a pdf file which can be shared with anyone. To go through either Virginia or Champaign sounds like more trouble than is warranted.

Just post the pdf file (as offered by Dave), and those interested will find it. Don't worry about who will view it.

To my surprise, Howard sent me his original copy of his
booklet of the 431st AAA AW Bn (M), which arrived in
the mail today. It is in remarkable condition for its age.

I will be able to scan double pages since the booklet's
dimensions are 5.5" by 7.5". With the two maps, I estimate
33-36 pages as a pdf. I can't predict the file size at this time.
I shall scan the booklet tomorrow.

Profound thanks to Howard, a veteran of the 431st AAA AW Battalion (M),
for providing his copy of the Bn history to the forum to be scanned.

I finished the job a few minutes ago and will mail the booklet back to Howard
next week. I scanned it at 300 dpi. The pdf is 35 pages and 21 megabytes.

Here is a screenshot of pages 42 and 43. Page 43 curiously describes an
incident of 12 (?!) German-flown P-47s attacking Bn HQ at Soultz, France,
on 30 December 1944.

I'll provide the complete file to the Moderators since I've never had any success
attaching a pdf to a post.

Howard,

Did you know Staige Falls? He was a corporal that joined the unit in North Africa. I'm thinking he was in C battery.

I also have his pistol and holster that he took from a dead german. The grips are made from the canopy of a fighter they shot down. It's a Sauer 38h and was made some time in 1943. It still shoots and is pretty accurate.
