Episode 5: they can wait no longer, the invasion begins. It looked like the whole channel was moving. By the end of D DAY the allied gamble has paid off. The allies now have a foothold in Europe. But the Germans still control most of Warsaw. PARIS, the French resistance rises up to fight the Germans. 11 weeks after D DAY the Allies roll into Paris. Then the Allies sweep into Belgium. In the Pacific the Americans continue their Island hopping campaign. The war came to Saipan. Back in Germany December 1944, the Battle of the Bulge. The Germans have launched 50 miles into Belgium. The American tanks were hit by German tanks hidden in the trees. All was in snow and the tanks slid around on the roads. The prisoners of the Germans after the battle numbered 20,000. The Americans were victorious. Episode 6: 1945, the end of the war is in sight. BUT the Allies are considering just what it will take to end the war. The Russian tanks were coming to Berlin. 23 miles from the German capital. Old men and boys are defending the city. Hitler greets them and gives them happy slaps on the cheek. March 1945, in the desert Americans are developing the Atomic bomb. The Americans take OKINAWA. THE Japanese resort to the Kamikaze. FRIDAY the 13th, the Kamikazes strike. (March 30, that was. I was born at 9:35 that night in Coaldale PA., it was Good Friday.) BUT the battle of Okinawa goes on. April 1945, the German army has been cut to pieces. Soviet tanks crushed the dead German soldiers in the streets. The German army has been beaten by the Soviet army. Germany surrenders on all fronts. Hitler is dead. London, Paris, celebrate. The U.S. Army enters the concentration camps. FOUND box cars full of dead people. Millions had been murdered. In the Pacific Okinawa falls. Now they must crush Japan. A secret weapon is being developed. It will save thousands of American lives. A B29 drops the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. 60% of the city has vanished. Nagasaki is next. Hundreds of thousands die instantly and thousands more will die from the radiation in the coming years. Japan surrenders. After six years of all out war it comes to an end. September 2, 1945 on the battleship Missouri, Japan signs the surrender agreement. THE END. And my father, U.S. Army Captain 29th Infantry Division, came home to Lehighton, Pennsylvania. I was an infant. He became a vice president for the Pennsylvania Power & Light Company. He passed away February 9, 1988.
