But at least you still have a considerable Navy.
Btw, a dutch submarin"sank" a french fisherboat last spring by "ramming" it.

This is the area of the most substantial cuts. Several of our biggest ships were sold or scrapped under the present government... :(

Basically the submarine service is all we have left of an effective force, apart from some frigates. And now that this sub has sunk a fisherman, I bet there's going to be a debate about the need for a sub service too.

Don't worry about the small size of your army Roel - everyone is suffering military cuts. Besides, you're part of NATO aren't you?
Rest assured, if you get attacked, Britain will send both her soldiers to help out...
    ;)

Well don't you see, since the US is antagonizing the whole arab world, it will be a matter of time before many of our citizens wil be drafted to fight world war three. So a little "peace" time training with assault rifles at the comfort of our own homes might not be that outragious. Just look at Israel, everyone including men women and even the baby sleeping in the crib are trained to use M-16 and Uzis and Ak-74s.

    Well thats also wrong..!!!!

Secondly the arab world wouldnt be able to trigger a Third world war, they are not nearly as strong as NATO and UN. they wouldnt have a chance, not the slightest. They can terrorise our people but they cant start a world war.

    KBO :D

Ricky, America is the World's melting pot. We have people coming into the USA from every walk of life because we offer one thing that many countries do not: opportunity. Unfortunately, we also bring in the undesirables under the guise of new citizens.

My opinion is that the USA is at a point in its lifeline compared to 1st Century Rome. The USA will not last as long as Rome did in a "world dominance" position. Things happen too fast and man's capability for destruction has improved many times.

Greg - so you want to arm your citizens to stop the decline of the USA's world position???

Also - I think someone brought up that the 'founding fathers' actually stated that ownership of arms should be within well organised militias, not simply in the hands of any bloke who happens to fancy owning them...

KBO / liang - Israel is in a slightly different position to America in regards the need for universal gun ownership/training of the population.
All citizens (with exeptions for ultra-Ortodox, and a few others) are in the army. All carry their weapons with them. Or used to, anyway. Why?
    Go read a history book!

America is not surrounded by militarily more powerful (well, numerically at least) neighbours dedicated to its destruction.
Israelis are not protecting themselves from their government, but their country from eradication.

Ricky, see my post under Assault Weapons Ban.

That pretty well explains my position.

Don't boast about it. I'm sure that the share of foreign immigrants in the population of Holland is much greater than that of the US. Some cities have about 50% immigrants living in them.

You get used to it when you're born here. I guess it's why I always take up a progressive position in an international argument.

What would be much more interesting is to ask how all the immigrant Turks and such feel about it. :D

To turn to more practical issues, if you want to know the answer to almost every important question you could reasonably ask about the history of assault rifles and their ammunition, then 'Assault Rifle: the Development of the Modern Military Rifle and its Ammunition' by Max Popenker and myself, is published this week!

    To quote the PR blurb:

"This book provides a comprehensive account of the development of the military assault rifle and its ammunition from the Second World War to the present day.

The first part commences with a brief historical summary of the assault rifle, its origins and its development. Gun design is then examined in detail, including operating mechanisms, weapon configuration and the requirements for a good assault rifle. Ammunition design and performance is next considered as it is the key element in the characteristics of an assault rifle. Ballistics, and especially the balance between recoil and effectiveness, are therefore covered in some detail, and the requirements for 'ideal' assault rifle cartridges are identified. This leads on to a history of the assault rifle cartridge, examining the reasons for the choices made and the many experiments discarded along the way.

The second part of the book describes the national military rifle programmes from World War 2 to the present day. It presents a general history of developments in each country, including experimental programmes, before describing the principal service and experimental weapons in detail.

The book concludes with two appendices: an ammunition data table, containing details of service and many experimental cartridges, and a comprehensive glossary."

What more could you ask for? :D You can order it from the publishers at: http://www.crowoodpress.co.uk/780/book_ ... 6126+700+2
and at a discount, making it ridiculously cheap...

First, let's define the term "assault rifle" as used by the US Government in the ban. It is a military "style" semi-auto rifle that had some of the following reatures: pistol grip, folding stock, flash suppressor, bayonet lug, mount for a grenade launcher, and a magazine that can hold more than 10 rounds of ammo. Basically, it was a ban on cosmetic items. The FBI and ATF studies proved that the AWB did nothing in it's 10 years to deter any crime. That's because nobody uses bayonets in crimes. It was a pillow measure to make the then administation look good on fighting crime but without having to put any resources in to place. It was all a show.

AK47's, Uzi's, etc. are NOT "assault weapons". They are fully auto firearms (the ATF refers to full-auto as machine guns). ALL machine guns have been regulated since the 1930's by the National Firearms Act. The NFA defines and regulates machine guns, explosives, incendiary devices, etc. You must apply for ownership of any of these devices. The liberals always scream about AK's etc. because they know that most people don't know anything about firearms and their laws. They can dupe the ignorant into believing there is a great threat on the streets and only the liberal politicians can save them.

Has oppresive gun control stopped crime in the UK and Australia?

There are semi-auto versions of AK's available. In fact, I plan on getting one in the near future. I think guns are cool. So much so, I got a dealer's license. My dream is to have at least one of every gun made!

Gun control has nothing to do with guns, it's about control. We had our Revolution because we got tired of being subjects! Armed private citizens is the only thing that prevents the government from making us subjects again.

As far as the 2nd Amendment and militias are concerned, every man is in the militia. When the Constitution was written, all regions had voluntary militias. That remained until 1913 with the Military Reorganization. In the MR, the military was divided into groups. The first is the Regular (active), Reserves and National Guard, and the Unorganized Militia. All male citizens belong to the Militia.

Sorry for the rant, but it's a sensitive subject.
