Ah Greg, you are a candidate for detective.

I guess it's time to confess, I carry a .40 Glock. I have previously carried an old Army .45, a S&W .357, a S&W 9mm, and now the Glock. I think the .40 and .45 are superior, along with the .357 Magnum. I did a lot of studying on it when we switched to the 9mm. The best example of how anemic the 9's are is when you shoot metal "pie plates". The .40s, .45s, and .357s will knock them down no problem. Hit them with a 9mm and they just sort of "plink" and slowly fall over. The Germans did some studies in the 80s or 90s involving shooting live goats (how they avoided the Animal Rights crowd in doing this I'll never know) with different handguns. The 9mm had problems to say the least.

I think the studies still bear out that most police shootouts take place at close range. I know they used to. Thank God I've never had to be involved in one, I can only imagine how excited anyone gets. Same for combat in war.

    Thanks SgtBob!

I switched to the 45ACP after my 9mm MAB (French) jammed after firing S&W 115gr JHP. Of course, sometime afterwards S&W recalled the ammo as being too hot, and it seems that a number of other had the same result.

This was some 25 years ago. My father retooled the 9mm so it would shoot again but the barrel had actually expanded, which caused it to jam.
Never shot accurately again after that. Used it for a bedside belly gun until I was burglarized in the early 90's at which the pistol became someone else's.

Sure miss the old man! He made several firearms, rechambered them, etc... and the 30.06 I still use to hunt was one he made the stock for.

Thanks again Sgt Bob, and take care, there in the South!

Roel, A "belly gun" is one that is used for extremely close combat. One where you reach out and poke it in the other guy's belly and start shooting.

Oh, that... I do that all the time. :-?
So you're expecting to wake up one night and see a burglar next to your bed, and then you can shoot him with your bedside belly gun? Do you have a gun for all ranges at your bedside? Like, a head gun, and then a body gun, and finally an area gun? Do you keep handgrenades there too?

I start shooting with my 120mm smoothbore, then use my Claymore mines, then my 81 mm mortar, then my SAW, then my shotgun, then my .44 magnum, then my belly gun, then my samarai sword, and then my Bowie knife. Surely everyone uses a similar lineup? :D

I'm working on it. I still lack a smoothbore 120mm, some claymore mines, an 81mm Mortar, an SAW, a shotgun, a .44 magnum and a belly gun. Oh, and does a bread knife qualify as a bowie knife?

Can anyone help me complete my collection? :D

Nah, I have a different lineup - being British I prefer the 120mm rifled gun...

Oh, and ditch the katana for an axe...

My choice for personal defense would be the MP5K-PDW(personal defense weapon because u have a choice of full or semi auto and can be modified to fire on burst fire but if i had to use a pistol it would be either the Baretta 92FS or the Glock 17

I'd prefer the Megastar in 10mm ACP.

The .50AE Desert Eagle is made by Israël.

    handcannons

the desert eagle is a beautiful gun, it is also the first crew served pistol. the damned thing weights a ton, needs wheels and a motor.
for self defense the best gun is the one you can shoot fast, will go bang every time, you can hit what you aim at with, and can carry all the time. the perfent gun that is too big or heavy and thus gets left behing is useless. the cannon that will kill rhinos but gives you a bad flinch and takes forever to get into action and for a follow up shot isn't going to cut it either. there are a lot of minor calibers that will work fine with good ammo. .32, .380, 9mm, and even the .25 are a lot better than a stick. a small slug in the right place and at the right time is a LOT better than a wonder bullet late and off target. pick a good reliable gun that you will carry, use the best ammo you can get, and practice a lot. by a lot i mean several hundred rounds a year. shoot from odd positions, off handed, weak eye, and practice getting the gun out and up. if you have to think about it you are going to lose. then pick your fight. its not worth it to shoot some loser over 50 bucks. save it for when its lives at stake. if you pull the trigger you will spend a lot of time talking to cops and in most cased you may be arrested and maybe charged. even if its a clear cut case the motions have to be gone through and the DA and cops have to look like they're doing their job. it will not be fun nor cheap. oh yah DO NOT forget to follow any permit or CCW laws. the cops will bust you even if the shooting was a good one if you did not get all the paperwork done first
