    non ww2 quotes

    "The Village Schoolmaster" poem by
    Oliver Goldsmith. (1728-1774)
Could well apply to correspondents to this Forum. The knowledge of some of the younger members simply amazes me.(Which doesn't take much to do!)

    goldsmith

Nuts? Nuts? Like the german officer at Bastoigne I fail to see the connection with Oliver Goldsmith>
Goldsmith's "Village Schoolmaster" was held in great respect by the villagers because of his great knowledge, I genuinely respect the tecnical knowledge and wish to learn shown by the young people born long after the War.Some of them in this Forum as young as 13years.
May be if they learn enough, they will not have fry in a burning tank.
It's no more pleasent now to die in a tank in Iraq than it was 60years ago in Normandy. There,s more to Tanks than Bull Parades and Dress uniforms.

I believe the thread is for famous WW2 quotes.

My quote had nothing to do with your post.

"Nuts" is a famous WW2 quote.

    That's all.

I really don't see the signal

Midway through the battle of Copenhagen, Sir Hyde lost his nerve and sent out the recall signal. Nelson, knowing that this was no time to flee, put his blind eye to good use by putting his telescope to it and saying, "I really don't see the signal." Sticking out the fight, he crushed the Danish fleet. Subsequently he was made a viscount, the title he would take with him to his death.

The "retreat hell, we're just attacking in another direction" quote should be moved here from the WWII qoutes. It was from the U.S. 1st Marine Division's battle with the Chinese communists at Chosin in Korea, not Douglas MacArthur in WWII.

Thanks for the clarification. The quote was never accompanied by any comment from the author or where he got it. Now we know.

I still can't split single posts and move them to other topics though. :D

    Re: FAMOUS non WW2 quotes

That would be Major General John Sedgwick, commanding officer of the 6th Corps of the Army of the Potomac. The incident occured during the initial stages of the Battle of Spotsylvania. General Sedgewick was *not* mounted at the time, BTW.
