I hate to see this thread languishing in a cob-webby corner of the Forum, so I thought I'd update it with another excellent TIGER book : Christopher W Wilbeck's 'Sledgehammers : Strengths & Flaws Of Tiger Tank Battalions In WWII' ( Aberjona Press, 2004 ).

A very accessible little book providing a useful overview and discussion of the use and effectiveness of the Tiger in WW2 ; it also has a nice overview of available Tiger literature and excellent bibliography......

If this is the same Tiger book as The english text 'Tiger & King Tiger tanks and their variants' by Spielberger then I'd cheeerfully reccomend it as one of the best technical books available, I've felt no urge to buy anymore mechanical data on the mark 6 since paying a rather high price for an admittedly rare copy. The best news is it seems to be due for reprinting soon and is being listed at about half what I paid last year. Still not exactly cheap, but well worth it.
Edit: Amazon.co.uk: Tigers I and II and Their Variants (Spielberger German Armor and Military Vehicle Series): Books: Walter J. Spielberger,Hilary L. Doyle republished in august.

Another classic read well worth hunting down is David Fletcher's 'Tiger! - a British view' which presents contemporary reports from the very first glimpses through to the capture and assessment of a working example (lovely old '131' itself). Mr fletcher does little more than comment in the margins and lets the different soldiers, scientists & intelligence departments of the day speak for themselves without any of the intervening decades of puffed up 'legend' intervening. It also contains a facsimile of the vehicle handbook as produced by the British, that alone makes it worth owning.

    Cheers,
    Adam.

Thanks, Adam - Wilbeck also recommends Fletcher's book which was published by HMSO - I'll be on the look-out for a copy.....

....one that doesn't appear in Wilbeck's bibliography is this account of the s.Pz.Abt. 503 in Normandy - a nice hardback if you can cope with the French

I'm tempted by the Didier Lodieu book....but a copy of Restayn's 'Tiger I On The Western Front' has just arrived from Amazon...in time to provide some summer holiday browsing over the next two weeks.:)

....I know ..I've just invested in this new German language reprint of the first title in your list published by Flechsig last year...worth getting via amazon.de at only €14 for a 416 page hardback (incredible value!) since it contains a large selection of 'new' photos - particularly of s.Pz.Abt 503 Tigers & crews - from Bernd Burmeister's collection..Bernd's uncle was a former 503 Tiger commander ...he was kind enough to send me some copies..

I've got the Fedorowicz s.Pz. Abt. 503 history and its also nice to see those pics reprinted properly in this new German edition as well..

It's seems like you got a real winner there! It is quite cheap to say the least. I may consider buying it.

you may not want to patronize these guys but they do have a wide huge selection and their strong points are German armor .......... you guys already know whom I speak.

JJF pubs in Canada and interesting that W. Schneider has already done the book on the Schwere SS Pz. Abt 102/502, why another one I wonder ?

Actually, I haven't yet come across a definitive book devoted to the King Tiger ( they usually get a chapter or two at the end of most 'Tiger' books ).

(This is the cue for FalkeEins to recommend 'Der Wunder Buch das Tiger II mit loads of Bilder' available in German only for £149.99p....;))

The Spielberger one (Tiger & Kingtiger Tanks & their variants) doesn't really lose steam once it gets to the TigerII, detail remains strong as he covers the I & II as essentially the same project.
Still no sign of the reprint though so don't buy it now if you fancy a shufti, it should be cheaper & easier to find soon.

    Cheers,
    Adam.

Neil this is a question I have had for months, is Das Reich By Schneider the same as the SS Schwere Pz Abt. 102/502 or two different volumes ?

'Invested in...' - that's the excuse I use for my wife !

No I haven't - doubtless this will be another FalkeEins recommendation which I shall be unable to resist when I finally see it in a shop.....

with the equivalent of around US 138.00 this is no steal of a big book. What Tigers in Combat 2 does not do this one does by putting the Das Reich Tigers with the heavy tank Abt. to finish out it's lineage. maps, first hand accts, every photo in the book from one review has been printed and released elsewhere........... too bad as I have a few Tiger books myself which may be a total amazement for a LW nut like me.

Around $ 90.00 in the states where released

    I just received #1 yesterday.

I've read maybe 1/3 of the way through, it's quite like no other book I own. Nice pictures, too.

Just managed to buy - via 'Amazon Marketplace' - a secondhand copy of Jentz/Doyle's 'Germany's Tiger Tanks : DW to Tiger I - Design, Production & Modifications'.

Maybe not for bedtime reading, but the illustrations look excellent and I'm looking forward to discovering the various differences between early/mid/late production Tigers - something I've always been confused by.....
