Talk about a wild guess...

OK, which animal is said to have been at the base of the mythical Unicorn, and which animal provided evidence?

The Narwal, a whale with a single, spiral-patterned 'horn' on its forehead.

That gave the evidence for it, yes, and inspired the common look of the Unicorn. That's the second part of the question. Now, which animal was the unicorn first derived from?

    That's the answer.

Hm, most of them do seem to have two horns. Anyway, of what I've heard, this is where the legend comes from.

And you're the boss, so I bow to your knowledge. ;)
Actually I do believe that is how the legend could have come about. I just wanted to flex my pedantry muscle. :D

    Stix....I like that!

There are always two: an apprentice, and a Master. But which one did we find? :D

    Quillin, you're it.

In a Petri dish belonging to Alexander Fleming.

Mould grew in it after spores allegedly blew in the window.

    IIRC it was penicilin.
Some fungus created it and killed all the surrounding bacteria in its petri dish (or equivalent)
So I'd say in a fungus in a petri dish or something alike a petri dish.

Stix was right. the answer i was looking for was "a fungus"

Fleming discovered it after he came back from a holiday. he left the window open and spores of a fungus blew in a dish (petri or dinner, it doesn't matter :D ) filled with bacteria. when Fleming came back he found that the fungus spores killed the bacteria.

    next question is for stix
