Köln Dom. the church was very ornate back then, I wonder ........ and even in the rebuilt stage it is awe-inspiring, but that is what I also thought of Sanct Stevens in Wien, they have done an incredible job of clean-up and restoration as the roof was completely blown off by the bombings and shellings

great pics thanks for sharing again, and keep at it

just got in a closer look at one of the spires.............yes it is Colonge, the Cathedral was built in 3 stages from the original 13th century plans started in 1258 slowly till 1788 to 1833, additional work from 1802-1861 and then 1829-1902. before, during and after major wars.

Yes, location is correct by Erich. I have seen other photos of the Panther in front of the Cathedral. I may have a dig. copy of it, I'll look.

I wonder if the right side drive wheel was knocked out before or after it took the side hill hit?

    Some great pics here:

I have a few leads for a start:

1)The picture with Major Bean is taken in the center of a large city that had its catheredral intact. It would be interesting to compare cathedral pictures.
    2) One of the gentleman is French (there is an officers kepi) and one of them is Captain John ....? (American)
    3) don't know about the gun, but I'm certain some experts on the forum will identify it sooon
    4) The monument is in France and apparently stems from the Great war. There are French infantery soldiers , Cuirassiers and infantery from 1870 too. I think this is from a large WWI cemeter yin Northern or eastern France. I will try to find out the place.
    5) the ruins of the German city will be difficult to identify. It's probably in the Ruhr since the Ninth army fought there afte rthe battle of Aachen.

Thanks Wessex for refreshing my mind about Verdun. I go there quite often actually, but I rather visit the trenches area. Metz would make sense for the office near the cathedral, but the presence of French Officers doesn't neceseraly mean the scene take splace in France. I will try to compare the catherdral. Through the window we can see bricks too , so I'll try to compare that as well.

More about the cathedral: It could indeed be Metz as the building down town are close enough to get such a picture when you're inside and it's definetely a gothic cathedral. The high and short roof and the turret fit too, but on the current turret there is a samll cone with a pike which is not on the picture. Now I know that this same tower was restaured after the war and when you imagine it without the cone, the turrets fits. I am still not certain, but it is certainly the best guess we've got at this point Structurae [fr]: Images: ID 1028

Skipper, glad you think it might be Metz aswell, I didn't post a photo of it last night but I too was looking at that small tower you mention, the one to left on this photo.

I couldn't find a wartime picture of it though.

One of the pics posted earlier by Booterhouse is an oberst (or General ) captured at Metz, so this is why I focuss on this Lorraine area. Besides other pictures show the Belgian Ardennes which are not too far to the Norht East. I also saw a later picture of the turret while it's being reconstructed.
