I need some maps, photgraphs of carentan for a Men of War game map. Are there any aerial photos along with ground camera shots from the ground that I could use?
Google is your friend for everything, just use the maps option, and that should help you out with anything from ww2 to modern photos.
well it may have been filmed in england but the town looks very truthful to the real town (not sure if they filmed in the town or a studio), I dont have any pictures of it sorry, but i saw that and wanted just to say, that just because its filmed in england doesnt mean that the place didnt look like that. Side note on call of duty 2's level carentan to the band of brothers episode with carentan its pretty scary how really they look, i was watching the episode remember the layout of the stage and just remembering where i would hide out in the buildings and where that was in terms of the street they were charging in on.

I really should organize my pictures better .... Found a couple more ... All the 'Now' shots I took myself in July of last year. Here's the award ceremony again. The ceremony was actually interrupted by a German mortar attack on the square ... Unfortunately a 4yr old local girl was killed, despite the best efforts of a US Medic to save her. And the same scene today ... I stood on the steps of 'The Memorial to the Dead' to take this shot ... As did the original photographer. Even the original 1944 lettering is still visible ... The wreath laying ceremony at the memorial, 20th June 1944 ... This one ... 11th July 2008 ... It still strikes me every time I view these photos that so little has changed, despite the damage to buildings as a result of the fighting that took place around here, every effort seems to have been made to put things back just the way they where. IMO that's a testament to the will of the local people :tennisclap:, and a smack in the face to the once occupying German Army. :birds:
great shots! thanks for posting more of them. Like you said its suprising how similar the town looks almost as if it was built back brick for brick.
Okay ... Bear with me, last couple of Carentan. No comparisons unfortunately, time was tight when I got to Carentan, last day in Normandy, the wife had had enough of "walking in the footsteps of Heroes". Don't really see the point of posting someone else's photos, they 'are' out there if you want them...Normandy 'now & then' This is a shot of an M7 SPG driving down Rue Holgate. The building with the Jeep outside is the 101st Aid Station. The building is still there. Further down Rue Holgate, the junction of what is named today as Avenue de 101st Airbourne can be seen (center shot) the aid station is just out of view around the bend. The street sign reads ... Rue du Cottin, at the junction of Rue de I'Isles... That's your lot for now ... I took some photos in and around the cathedral in Carentan ...I'll post them if anyone's interested.
looking at the built up nature of Carentan, I would have thought that taking the town would be much bloodier and more difficult than it was. I certainly expected more ruined buildings and craters.
We are researching a property south of Carentan which was used as a field hospital, local history tells us it was occupied by the Germans (SS we believe), then taken by the allies after the landings. We are trying to find photos (inc aerial) of this area, would like to see if old photo of the property still exisits. Does anyone have any pics / links covering these areas south of Carentan: Taut-Vire Canal, Montmartin-en-Graignes and St Jean de Daye? Regards.
Those are some great photos. I'm currently building a flames of war table on carentan & I was stuck as to how it looked back then. Thanks for the inspiration
