Many of the woods in my county (Bedfordshire) were used as ammunition dumps of one kind or another during the war. One of them was a huge Mustard Gas dump, which was not fully cleared out - in the 1980s they found a load of (full) mustard gas canisters there! To go off topic a little (again): One rather unusual placing of an ammo dump - along one road were huts full of grenades. The back of the huts were against a wire fence. On the other side of the fence was a POW camp full of German prisoners! They were likely to know that the huts were ammo storage - a local lad on a motorbike crashed into a hut and set of a rather large explosion.
Once heard a story about a couple of guys in the western desert stopped to have a brew up and unknowly lit their fire on top of a buried fuel dump! A couple of MPs managed to stop them from becoming the first englishmen into space.
And imagine that some others are actually looking for weapons buried under forests and fields, fruitlessly...
