I don't think it's because they did that well. They have a unnatural hard on for these guys. Look at it this way. If Penn State had a loss or two the football community would be laughing at such a disappointing and weak Big Ten this year.
I agree and I find it both perplexing and unfortunate. BC does not deserve to be in the Top 25 right now but in past years, when they have deserved it, it has taken forever. I wonder how much of this is driven by the news media which wants to create more excitement for all of the televised Ohio State games (and USC, for that matter).
Haha. USC is another one. I've heard some supossed experts claim that despite one loss they still deserve a number one ranking. Thank god those guys don't vote
And the BCS ranks after week 9 1. Texas 8-0 2. Alabama 8-0 3. Penn State 9-0 4. Oklahoma 7-1 5. USC 6-1 6. Georgia 7-1 7. Texas Tech 8-0 8. Florida 6-1 9. Oklahoma State 7-1 10. Utah 8-0 11. Boise State 7-0 12. Ohio State 7-2 13. TCU 8-1 14. Missouri 6-2 15. Florida State 6-1 16. Ball State 8-0 17. Minnesota 7-1 18. Tulsa 7-0 19. LSU 5-2 20. BYU 7-1 21. Michigan State 7-2 22. North Carolina 6-2 23. South Florida 6-2 24. Oregon 6-2 25. UConn 6-2
I was explaining to my 11yo daughter this weekend about the rankings, etc and was telling her about the 15 or so teams that are considered to be the "elite" of college football. These teams seem to get benefit of the doubt in the rankings and are considered powerful unless their record overwhelmingly proves otherwise. USC, Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, LSU, Florida State, Notre Dame, Tennessee. Can you think of any more?
The same thing happens in our local little league instead it is usually the weaker players who end up getting "ranked" because their Dads are coaching or managing!
This morning I heard on ESPN Radio (Colin Cowherd, I think) a compelling argument for PSU being ranked first in the polls. The radio personality argued that PSU has a great road win at Ohio State but Texas does not have any quality road wins. I think Texas will face its true test next week when it plays Texas Tech at Texas Tech. If the Longhorns win, they are likely to ride out the season at number 1, at least until the national championship game.
I still listen to Colins show but I don't like the guy. He said the whole whole week before PSU played that people are fools if the thought Penn St could win that game then flipped his opinion on the friday before the game. Then toted himself as the all knowing guru he thinks he is for calling the win. He commonly calls callers idiots and fools. Usually when he picks games I go the other way. Phillies cant make the World Series much less win it, the Redskins cant beat Dallas and Philly back to back on the road, USC will go undefeated etc etc. Anyways, Texas is currently down by three but they look to be getting things going now. Florida looked impressive today. There were a couple of upsets today. Georgia, Florida St, Minnisota, S. Florida, and Connecticut all lost. Michigan St and BYU both won very close games. EDIT: Texas lost. Texas Tech scored a touchdown with one second left in the game to win. Texas came back and took the lead but left just a little to much time on the clock.
# 1 Texas just lost in the last seconds to Texas Tech.............looks like Bama has # 1 sewn up now eh ?
Well, I hope so Erich, sorta. We'll just see. With the Crimson Tide only winning by 5 touchdowns against an unranked team, while TT and UF beat the ever-living dog slobber out of ranked teams, who knows? On the bright side, both the Cow College and the University of South Bend lost.
I would agree. My prediction... 1. Bama with around 40 first place votes 2. Penn St. with 15-20 votes 3. Texas Tech with 5 votes - Remaining undefeated should jump them up to top 3 4. Oklahoma 5. Florida I think Texas will drop to around 7 or 8 but wouldnt be surprised if they stay in the top 5
It would be hard to keep Texas in the top 5. Mike's list looks pretty much on the money but I think that Penn State and Bama will be closer and Florida will get some first place votes. For Texas to be in the top 5, Oklahoma would have to drop out of the top 5 and I do not see that happening.
AP Top 25 following 10 weeks of play 1. Alabama (46) 9-0 1,600 2. Texas Tech (12) 9-0 1,528 3. Penn State (6) 9-0 1,525 4. Florida (1) 7-1 1,398 5. Texas 8-1 1,353 6. Oklahoma 8-1 1,324 7. USC 7-1 1,250 8. Oklahoma State 8-1 1,198 9. Boise State 8-0 1,030 10. Utah 9-0 1,028 11. TCU 9-1 958 12. Ohio State 7-2 898 13. Missouri 7-2 830 14. Georgia 7-2 808 15. LSU 6-2 746 16. Ball State 8-0 594 17. Brigham Young 8-1 536 18. Michigan State 8-2 456 19. North Carolina 6-2 418 20. West Virginia 6-2 303 21. California 6-2 288 22. Georgia Tech 7-2 286 23. Maryland 6-2 242 24. Florida State 6-2 128 25. Pittsburgh 6-2 96
You were pretty close, Mike. There are still 3 weeks left to go and LSU and the Cow College still lurks just over the horizon. It does not matter how poorly each team is doing in a given year, the Iron Bowl is always a close game. I hope this year that it will not be. Roll Tide
Heres the BCS poll. Penn State failed to move up here as well. 1. Alabama 9-0 2. Texas Tech 9-0 3. Penn State 9-0 4. Texas 8-1 5. Florida 7-1 6. Oklahoma 8-1 7. USC 7-1 8. Utah 9-0 9. Oklahoma State 8-1 10. Boise State 8-0 11. Ohio State 7-2 12. TCU 9-1 13. Georgia 7-2 14. Missouri 7-2 15. BYU 8-1 16. LSU 6-2 17. Ball State 8-0 18. Michigan State 8-2 19. North Carolina 6-2 20. Georgia Tech 7-2 21. California 6-2 22. Florida State 6-2 23. Maryland 6-2 24. Northwestern 7-2 25. West Virginia 6-2
With less than a minute left Utah pushed past TCU to wwin 13-10. Unless someone loses on Saturday though, don't look for them to move up the rankings. Also Virginia Tech beat Mayland. Maryland should drop from the rankings for good now.
