Commercial aircraft versus military freight planes

    I think they could fit two Abrams in Galaxy but that would exceed its maximum cargoweight with about 20 tons.

    C-5B maximum wartime payload: 291,000 pounds (130,950 kilograms)...empty weigth of a M1A2 (loaded 70,000Kg or so?)?

    You don't need a "tank sized" parachute for LAPES system. The chute is there just to decelerate the forward movement.

    Even for the more conventional methods of getting things to the ground, the parachute is not the only thing that is lowering the speed in which the cargo hits the ground when you push out heavy weights at altitude. The cargo can have a rocket system installed on the parachute system, which decelerates the speed of "impact" even more during the last few meters.

    The two biggest problems for airdropping overweight cargo are the moving aircraft CG and having sturdy enough materials to withstand the forces that are affecting both the plane and the cargo.
