Seventy-five years ago today, 8 June 1943, Convoy UGF.9 sailed from Hampton Roads Port of Embarkation carrying the 45th Infantry Division (reinforced) on its voyage to the Old World and to destiny. Thirteen attack transports, five cargo ships, two fleet oilers, a combat stores vessel, an ammunition ship, with a screen of ten destroyers and the cruiser Philadelphia, 35 ships in total, under the command of the USS Ancon ferrying 22,000 GIs and 46,000 tons of cargo across the Atlantic.
