    You'd be amazed at how often this picture is used in books. I have at least three books on Stalingrad alone-that have this picture either on its cover and or inside somewhere. I plan on having my copy of the photo placed on a new Mouse Pad I need.

    Wolfy;
    Just finished Book 1 and am eagerly awaiting the publication of # 2. This is a really good detective story and some thoughts on the subject; Russki was starting to show improvement during Blau and the Germans did not seem to pay much attention to the fact. They failed to notice that Russki seized and held two important river crossings in the summer-two crossings which would prove vital later that year. Glantz points out that Russki was able to almost magically ressurrect destroyed armies-something which has something to do with the fact that large numbers of Red Army men were able to escape encirclements. Why? Well STAVKA did it's best to avoid the disasterous encirclements of Barbarossa but also...Glantz does not give voice to this but your average Frontovik would have had to have heard about the horrific fates of the Soldiers of 1941 and would have had motivation not to get captured. These guys would had to have given some thought as to escape routes and actions in the event that their unit became surrounded. Many also chose to fight to death. Then there was the "start and stop" nature of the German offenses as logistics became a problem.
    Of particular interest was the Crimean campaign about which little has been written. It seems that the Wehrmacht performed brilliantly but was too short on men and supplies to achieve any lasting results. Events further North would render the Crimean campaign irrelevent before the end of the year. WHATIF...Hitler would not have divided his forces? Well he did and this would have seemed to have been a fatal error.
    In all a good read-and is it just my imagination or has Colonel Glantz's writing become less ponderous?

    Despite not being a total Glantz fan, I've just bought volume 1 and it's a very impressive tome. On the strength of that, I've gone and ordered volume 2 ( both are still available from Book Depository at not too 'silly' prices ). There seems to be no sign of Volume 3 just yet ; I've gone for the first two because University Press titles usually have smaller print runs than mainstream publishers and, when they go OOP, prices can march upwards.

    Maybe I will give Glantz a third chance, "struggled" through 3 of his books so far and couldn't really justfy the effort, horrible maps and lack of focus being my main gripes.Maybe the less scholarly but much more readable Michael K. Jones is as far as I can go.

    Glantz is never and 'easy read' and I use his books more for reference than for cover-to-cover reading. However, I do appreciate his work as excellent scholarship and research.

    I think Glantz' work is best summed up for me in the very recent overview of Stalingrad literature in Frank Ellis' 'The Stalingrad Cauldron' where he says : -

    'Any student of the Stalingrad battle seeking a detailed analysis of German and Soviet operational thinking and planning is obliged to read these volumes.......To enjoy them at their best....you have to retreat into your bunker and master, ponder and savour the detail...'

    And at the moment, there still seems to be no firm news of a publishing date for Vol. III ( surely one of the most long-awaited military history titles of recent years ).

    So - off to the Bunker we go................. :pipesmoke:

    I found The Bear Went Over the Mountain very readable. It's available on line by the way.

    Hygiene has never been a strong feature of food served on an AFV. No egg banjo is complete without an oily thumbprint.

    Well, for some reason vol. 3.2 has suddenly disappeared from every Amazon website...(US & UK)

    Hopefully it will come again, as I ain't really up for yet another delay...

    Good luck to us all:)
