Destroyed tanks

That Sherman "Cairo".......I've never seen wooden planks mounted to any tank before.Would this be as good or better than the German "Schuerzen" metal skirts?

 

I've heard of Sherman crews putting logs on the front of their tanks before, I wonder how they got them on?

 

Japanese tanks where more crap than Italian and (SOME) British tanks put together. Apparently, a 75mm AP round would go straight through without actually stopping the tank, Unless it hit something vital or ammunition.

Wooden planks on the sides of Shermans was to prevent magnetic mines from attaching. A common practice in the PTO.

 

Wire or chain or rope or whatever the hell we had.

 

Yes I know that, but how would they make the chains/ropes or whatever stick on? This has always confused me.

 

There were hooks, rings, and rails for trying on baggage and camoflage nets. Others could be welded on by the mechanics, and holes cut in the edge of the fenders over the tracks. A cable/rope could be looped entirely around the turret

The Tiger: I know & see it doesn't look destroyed but I had to let him see you. Possible is that the Tank was broken inside or defect and that they used a heavy truck or crane to throw him aside.

 

Many times they welded (tack welded)(gusset's) a "bookshelf" type piece of flat-stock metal at the line just even/above the track, straight across (six-eight inches deep). Sorta like the way they did "Hedge-Choppers" & "Spaced (especially on the round hull Shermans) extra armor (which became available later on). Then they stacked whatever, sandbags & logs. Tied them together once on.
Many tanks Tigers, T-34s, Shermans carried logs on their sides for (as well as extra protection against "hollow charge" weapons), to aid in getting un-stuck in mud/snow. A Two-Fer.
The track & boogies hung on hooks (tack welded), gas/oil/water cans, cable/wire, rations etc stuffed in/tied on.
Anything to break up the searing blast of the Panzerfaust/Bazooka/Piat.

 

The picture I promised: six destroyed tanks in a row and since it's Christmas, an extra Ju52. All on the same picture. Identification of the six German tanks would be very welcome.

 

Theres a Marder III (back row, right), left of that, 2 StuGs, Hetzer (I think), Far left, another StuG. Closest (Next to plane), another StuG.

Sturmkreuz, this is an Elefant. The vehicle in the picture is a Marder III.
