    One of the reasons these are great is the casting of light onto things that have somewhat become 'details' in the mainstream historiography of the war. Things that don't get all that much chatter but were apparently more significant and worthy of such sarcastic attack in the period.
    The obsession with Laval.
    Isolationism (which is definitely a tad glossed over as a side-note now).
    Home front stuff, Inflation, inertia, racism etc.

    For me at least, they bring home a few things I tend to forget. Very contemporary, very 'real'.

    I found them first round by going through the Op-Ed pages of the contemporary newspapers. Of course they dovetailed nicely with the news and opinion pieces, validating them quite effectively. The spirit of these pieces was that of the general public, in large part, at the time. If I live another twenty years I hope to find a similar collection for "the loyal opposition".
