I was reading the Wall Street Journal and came across an ad that immediately caught my eye.

It was for an Enigma machine (circa 1943) for sale by M.S. Rau Antiques in New Orleans.

The asking price is a mere $250,000.

My birthday is coming up soon.

That's cheaper than the P-51 I originally asked for, it is $1,799,000.

This says all you need to know about me. I was going to throw the paper in the recycling bin, but wanted to look at the ad one more time. As I was thumbing through the pages I came across an ad for diamond jewelry, in the same corner spot, a couple of pages before the Enigma ad. I never even noticed it.

Who says diamonds are a girl's best friend?

I would love to get it for you, Clementine, but I don't think my bank account would stand it. Maybe you can get it for me, since my birthday is less than two weeks away. I'd be happy to share.

I saw pawnstars on TV the other day and one guy brought one in it was sold for a a couple of hundred dollars I believe..... I freaked out that he actually let it go. This being said they are not so rare. there were a bunch found in Spain a few years ago. What makes them so popular is possibly the Hollywood movies about U-Boote .

i know nothing of the resale value, but doesn't their worth depend on the rotors?

    Quick searched this nugget:

bronk7 - I could not get it to link to the site, but if you copy that link and put it in your browser it should come up, or you can look up MS Rau Antiques, and then do a search for "Enigma" when you get to the site.

I'll make a deal with you, Lou, IF someone buys that for me for my birthday, I will share it with you.

The description from the website is attached, and includes this detail about the rotors:

"...three-rotor Enigma I machine was used by the German Army during WWII. This machine, manufactured in Berlin, features three moving code rotors, or "walzen" (wheels), and a Steckerbrett, or plug board."

The good news, they are now only asking $245,000.

Lou, maybe they'll let you pay for it with 10,000 easy payments of $24.50. Watch out, though. Where they really screw you over is on the shipping & handling.

Hmm. I could do 10,000 yearly payments of $24.50 if they would let me have it now.

Lou, if you make the payments, I will drive to New Orleans and pick it up. No shipping and handling charges.

    Deal?
