OK so who else voted for "1944", the Ukrainian entry? A topical song about the fate of the singer's grandmother, deported with other 230,000 Crimean Tartars for collaborating with the Germans in 1942-43.

The guest Australian entry was firmly in the lead until there was a massive phone vote for the Ukranians. The phone in was between the Russians (who had a good song) and the Ukranians.

Could this be the song to start WW3?

I thought the hottest chick was Belgium...the best dancer Belgium...the best song, Belgium...I thought Australia only about the fourth best...like the two hosts too.
I think people were watching her weird stage moves to listen too much to the lyrics from Ukraine... : )

This year Ukraine won with a focused song (1944). Last year France had a song that also made reference to the Second World War, but finaly ranked 25th out of 27 places ... I found the song of the French, much better than the Ukrainian this year ...

Great Britain... It's usually career suicide, in this country at least, to do the Eurovision Song Contest; so that's why you rarely see anyone anyone's ever heard of represent GB in the Eurovision Song Contest.

Career suicide or lack of talent contest? I don't bother watch it anyway and I couldn't care less whether some people use their patriot fiber to vote for some of the lunatics who show up there.

And they think FIFA was corrupt. Is this the only vote Russia cannot fix?

Did not see, clashed with washing my hair.

    Career suicide.
There is nothing stopping The Rolling Stones or The Spice Girls from representing GB or any other country in the contest; it's not like British music lacks talent, just desire for Eurovision; Career Suicide basically.

I think its changing...its getting more prestige these days...and many artists like the exposure. Our last two entrants used the contest as a stepping stone into Europe...and its working...Guy Sebastian followed the contest with a single and some touring...made a killing apparently. Its not s singing contest...its a song contest...so, The Rolling stones may not want to appear, but they can write a song for somebody else...(its also exposure to song writers).
The new judging set-up also is fairer and less open to the usual voting streams...countries like Australia also break up traditional voting streams. We got 12 points from Belgium for example...(and Belgium got 12 off us!) weird.
Glad Russia didn't win, whilst being the favourite...it was a pretty boring song. How nice was Armenia!?? And Spain...this is why I like Eurovision...the Eurobabes!

Having non European countires invited is nothing but corporate. One day we"ll have the top three with Turkey , Australia and....... Mars. Nothing against that, but the thing is called Eurosong, not "universesong" festival.

Australia has been multicultural since the war...the vast majority of migrants coming from Europe...I have been watching the Eurovision song contest since I was 7 years old (38 years ago) and I loved it then too. So Australia has been receiving the Eurovision contest for over 40 years...we not only get the final but we stream the two semi finals also...people come together all over Australia to watch, cheer and laugh....yes laugh, the contest has NEVER taken itself seriously (the mid break song proved that as the song was all about making fun of itself - making fun of the contest!) It prides itself in finding the weird and wonderful...stuff you wouldn't normally see) remember the death metal band? All made up to look like demons and growled out their song?
As for corporate? Huh? I don't remember any adds or product placement, not even a mention of who made the dresses...I'll need some explanation of that comment.
In Short, Australia was invited because we've been a huge fan for decades, pretty much since it started. The organisers have been well aware of this the whole time...and for something different invited Australia to compete...we are still guest competitors. We did so well, and was so well accepted that they invited us back...With this success the competition (quite rightly) is looking to expand and change a tired format. I really don't understand all the hating...new songs, beautiful women and fun...whats to hate?? Doesn't sound like half of you even watch it...yet know its crap?

while I can understand why Australia is invited, I can't help thinking this is a also a marketing gesture (if you prefer this word ather than corporate) in a desperate attempt to save a programm that reminds Europeans of the cold war area and when people were listening to disco. There is no hate whatsoever, but this programme is a relic from the 20th century that is appreciated abroad for its pitoresque aspect . Adding politics to it on top of it isn't the wisest thing to do either. Not listening to half of it? That is true, but only because we were forced to listen to any trailer, commercials, bits of news , shows and are force fed by it year after year before it even started. I respect the fact you like this show, I hope you'll respect my choice too.

Its a Kitsch programme and much of it is toe curling. However, it fills a lot of airtime and attracts a massive audience. Its a continent wide X Factor/pop idol with a big splash of national pride and opportunities for political gestures by the public. Its also an advert for the participating countries even if its just to jeer the street lit end gable of a house in Belarus as their "light show" Whats not to like?

It also something about Europe as a whole. #1 The common European language is English #2 The common European poplar culture is UK/US dominated.

For years we got the English telecast with Pom commentators...the English, being English just spent two hours insulting every step and wardrobe...but with the wit of a master...was always a big addition to the telecast.

It is so bad that it has a cult status in the UK with specialised parties etc. I opted for an evening of root canal treatment without anaesthetic.

Another year gone and another Eurovision...Britain was looking the winner with "Space Man" - In my top five worst songs of the night

Ukraine well down the list after the first round of voting...with Australia sitting in 9th...And Germany without a single point.
With the second "people's vote" tele-voting round Ukraine received 439 votes! Sending them straight to the top with 631 points.

Thought the singer was Jamiroquai for a minute there...He left shortly after the win to go back to fighting Russians...

Believe it or not, this was Australia's entry...

Finland brought it again with The Rasmus
    [IMG]

    Final 5 were:

    1. Ukraine
    2. United Kingdom
    3. Spain
    4. Sweden
    5. Serbia

Shout outs to Spain and Greece
    [IMG]

And Greece...The lovely lady forgot her underwear...Wow!
