I forgot one, 'Good Morning Vietnam', fantastic war movie and foreign to me since britain isny quite the 51st state yet. FANTASTIC FILM
Thank you Kai, and from reading about it--it does look to be a nice onr to see. I think ill go look and see if Bellandblade has it. Stefan--Puerto Rico is already and unofficially the 51st state England will have to vie for the 52nd spot
I love Stalingrad. I have it and Das Boot on dvd, but I think Stalingrad is the better of the two. I love the quality of the gear and uniforms in Stalingrad, except for the east german jackboots. The only thing that I really didn't like in the movie was the unconverted czech half tracks. I thought all the period style haircuts were awesome(something that SPR needed, but instead they decided to give all the germans neo nazi haircuts).
Sorry, I forgot to add this to my last post. Does anyone know about a german film called the bridge? I know it was made in the 50s, but thats all I know.
Hi PzGdr--im familiar with it and in German it is called: "Die Brucke." You can currently get a VHS or DVD copy from belleandblade for about $29.99. Its supposed to be pretty good and everyone I have talked to that has seen it likes it.
Nice links, Kai. Good to see that I'm not the only one in the world loving that anti-war movie. It#s a shame that that few people know that movie. As for "stalingrad", did you know that this is basically a remake of the German 1958 "Mother of all Stalingrad-movies" called "hunde, wollt ihr ewig leben?" (Dogs, do you want to live forever?) The director (Vilsmeier) just took many key scenes from the original movie and replayed them in his movie (the last plane, the Hitler speech in the MASH, etc.). Notquite a sign for originality. Some screenshots (german site) from the original: http://www.neue-oz.de/unterhaltung/_dvd/dvdstandbilder/_hunde_wollt_ihr_ewig_leben/ Cheers,
My favourite war movies are Stalingrad and Das Boot. I also like 'A Bridge Too Far' (yes, it is foreign to me ). My favourite american war movie is the Thin Red Line which I think is great. Best regards/ Daniel
A Bridge Too Far definately is a classic. Also--I sent you a PM with the info you requested my friend
I remember a black and white movie made in Germanyh? For the life of me cant remember the name and was shown with English subtitles, about a group of young German troops, defending a bridge over small river leading to a non descript town, all had been to school together and their officer or nco was I believe their teacher..who didnt feature too much as dissapeared into town.. Volkstrum? Movie was about their feelings and fears really with a violent ending only, whereby one of the guys kills one of his friends in error.. If this makes any sense to our German posters, and you can figure the name of it out of that description Id be grateful for the name as Id love to see that one again.. Urqh wanders off again..
Hello, Urgh! That must be "the Bridge-Die Brucke" and is in its simple way quite a touching film. I remember how the US soldier tries to tell the kids the war is over and unfortunately is killed during this..(?) Well, that was quite a long time ago!
Blimey Kai, how do you do that? Excellent, that sounds like it, Ill have to try and get hold of it. Cheers.
Maybe others will be able to help me out but I remember seeing a Polish Movie made in the 50s about the Warsaw uprising, it was very poignant with some tremendous battle scenes. I found out later that it was part of a trilogy but Ive no idea who the director was and havent seen the other two films. Im also going to apologise for my lack of punctuation im using a Dutch keyboard and havent been able to master it yet.
The Polish movie is Canal from 1957 directed by Andrzej Wajda. Canal/ They Loved Life (1957) A group cut off from the main group of Home Army Resistance fighting a losing yet heroic battle with the German, enters the sewers, the only escape from death. Madry, a daredevil leads this group, comprising Halinka, the courier and a deranged composer. Strokrotka (Daisy) and Korab continue to talk about love amidst the surrounding filth. Zadra, the officer who has strongest doubts about the movement, acts as a counterpoint to Madry. Zadra reach the exit only to finds his sergeant had misled him about the rest of the group following close behind. Meanwhile they had died a gruesome death. Discarding the light and life ahead Zadra returns for his comrades. Kanal diminishes the gulf between the reality of actual events and the mentality and behaviour of the characters and an abstract vision of a sealed world whose inhabitants are doomed to extinction. It is basically a human drama where the participants cannot surrender nor do they have a choice of victory. "Das Boot", definately. "Plot: Killing Hitler" is another one. I definately MUST watch "Stalingrad". And I cannot forget about "Tora! Tora! Tora!"
"The Winter War", from Finland, is about the Finnish/Russian war during 1939/1940. Fantastic film, perhaps my favorite war film of all time. Do yourself a favor and check it out if you can.
